What is a Cadillac ATS-V?

Most people that aren't car people have no clue about this car. When you first tell people you own a Cadillac most minds conjure up grandpa's finned Cadillac with a 20 foot hood, but this ain't grandpa's Cadillac anymore. In today's world, Cadillac's are known for innovative performance on par with the best the rest of the world can offer, and this car is no exception.

With the introduction of the V Series models, Cadillac stepped up to the world of serious high performance cars. The initial design criteria for the 2012 ATS debut was based on the BMW E46 3 Series.

To establish parameters around which they would design the ATS, GM engineers benchmarked the 1999-2006 BMW E46 3 Series, which ATS chief engineer Dave Masch and his team regarded as the most dynamic and driver-focused iteration of the 3 Series. The engineers emphasized low weight when developing the ATS and their efforts resulted in a finished vehicle that weighs less than the BMW E46 benchmark. To achieve this result, Masch suggested that the engineering team disregarded certain GM product development rules that, had they been followed, would have resulted in a heavier vehicle.

But Cadillac needed to bump up the performance even more, and that's how the V Series got started. The V Series is Cadillac's version of Chevrolet Corvettes.

The Cadillac ATS-V is a high performance version of the Cadillac ATS, similar to how the CTS-V is to the standard CTS model. The ATS-V series includes two body styles, which feature a turbocharged DOHC V-6 engine and a sport-tuned suspension. The ATS-V sedan and coupe were introduced for the 2016 model year.

The sedan with the automatic transmission can reach 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 189 mph. The ATS-V is rear-wheel drive, and is powered by a LF4 3.6L twin turbocharged V6 producing 464 hp and 445 lb⋅ft of torque.

Motor Trend conducted a comparison between the BMW M3, ATS-V, and Mercedes-AMG C63-S. The Cadillac managed to accelerate faster than both German vehicles and was the fastest around Willow Springs International Motorsports Park; it was also the least expensive in the test.

This car is a 2017 coupe with 11, 700 miles and these were the production numbers. As you can see, there aren't a lot of these around, especially the coupes.

The total numbers for 2016 through 2019 look like this:

Car people know that you can go online to build and price new cars from just about any manufacturer, and luckily Cadillac has a site for the legacy cars (older cars) where you can go build and price the older cars just like you could do when they were new. So I took all the options on the car and plugged it in and came up with this. And no, thankfully the original owner took the depreciation hit because this is not close to what I paid (the car was listed at $44K with 11, 700 miles).  Goes to show you why you don't want to buy a new car. 😉

In the next post I'll talk about my planned modifications. 🙂 Of course, what red blooded car guy wouldn't make changes??? 🙂 And I think the changes are going to be awesome. Oh... she has a name now.

Really great cars. I always go to the drag races that are held at Heavens Landing airstrip up here every year and there are always a few ATS-V and CTS-V. Probably one of the best stock performance cars America makes, and one of the only ones that doesn't make you sacrifice room and comfort in order to drive it lol.

    • Good morning! The mostly sunny days will give way to clouds and rain beginning today, and those chances will continue through the middle of next week. As you can see from this water vapor image, the moisture has returned to most of the southeast, and that moisture combined with daytime heating means afternoon showers and thunderstorms.    We're still focused on Cristobal and how it may effect our weather in the coming days. Right now he is still wandering around the Yucatan Peninsula (apparently lost and in need of directions) but is expected to make a left turn and head out into the Gulf of Mexico. The general thoughts haven't changed and Cristobal is expected to make landfall in Louisiana as a tropical storm on Monday.    Exactly what that means for us will depend on the track of Cristobal. We will be on the wetter side of the storm, but the models vary in the exact details. Here's a look at the Euro and GFS precipitable water guidance, and while they agree in principle, the details differ.   I now have everything working again, the automated messages and flowing and I've turned on the tropical messages. My weather station data is online and the webpage is updating correctly now. I think I have all of my data reset but I'll check in a day or two in case I need to clean up some more. All I need now is to get the webcams installed and I'll be in business. Hope everyone has a great Thursday!
    • We need some rain for the gardens up here!
    • Good morning! Yesterday was a preview of summer, so I hope you enjoyed it. 🙂 Today will be similar but our rain chances begin to go up this afternoon, and by tomorrow the rain will return. None of this is from Tropical Storm Cristobal... yet. 🙂 As you can see in the water vapor image from around 5:30 AM, the moisture is on the increase for our area and once the rain arrives, it is going to hang around for 6-7 days. Oh joy!   Tropical Storm Cristobal All eyes are on Tropical Storm Cristobal as it meanders around the Bay of Campeche for the next couple of days. It apparently likes that area and decided to extend its stay, much to the chagrin of the folks that live there.   But it will start moving, and once it does, the central Gulf looks like a nice place for it to travel to.               The Euro storms tracks, notice fewer red lines today, which means more likely a tropical storm and less likely a hurricane.  And this tropical storm force wind probability image shows a pretty good chance of this scenario happening.    Moisture will be driven north and where it goes is anyone's guess right now. Here are precipitable water loops from the GFS and Euro.   At this point, the main threat for us will be heavy rain, and that depends on the exact track that Cristobal takes. Here is a look at the 10 day rainfall totals from the GFS, Euro, and Canadian models.   You can see that those areas just to the east of the eventual track show the most rainfall, so exactly where Cristobal goes determines that. And since we don't have a crystal ball for Cristobal we'll have to wait and see. 🙂 NWS Atlanta doesn't have a lot to say about it at the moment.   I should have the rest of my computers working today, and the automated messages should start flowing again. I still need to remount the weather station in its permanent location and get the anemometer mounted on the roof, but it is transmitting live data now.  So enjoy the sun while you can, the clouds and rain are going to wipe that away for a while. Have a great Wednesday!
