End of January Winter Weather Possibilities

Recommended Posts

I'll take the blame on this one, everyone! 🤣 I decided to take the morning off because I couldn't stand the idea of being chained to my desk and teaching classes all morning. I really wanted to enjoy the morning with my 2 year old since his pre-school is closed. I take the day off, send all the emails to my students, and then read the last 30 comments in the thread. That's what I get for wishing too hard, I guess... My bad!

The better dynamics are to our north closer to the base of the northern split flow branch, and where the much colder air is.

This is still kind of contrary to the overall "vibe" the TV folks are giving off.  And they were saying the temps will stay above freezing till nightfall, with wind to dry things off before then.  That kind of relaxed attitude makes me a little nervous.

Euro takes a big jump back up in snow totals. Trends are going back good right now. Roller coaster in full effect lol. Saw someone on AmericanWx say that this is similar to the modeling trends we saw last year with the frontal system. Models looked really good at 4-5 days out, then backed way off initially overplaying the effect of the lower level downsloping, and then had to play catch up late as they picked up on the SW flow aloft supporting light precip longer. Like I said the other day, it’s just gonna be last minute before we really have a good feel for this one.

So there is still this uncertain area in atlanta and to the sw? That was also the thought last night. What do you think?? Will we end up getting a heavy band set up in and sw of atlanta?

Yes. Some of the bright banding I saw on the simulated radar was in that area, so it is certainly possible.

What’s interesting is that the NWS out of Birmingham just added more counties to the Winter Storm Warning for boarding Georgia counties. I don’t get it.

I think timing and no real mountains to deal with make things much easier for them to have confidence.

It's all just hard to figure out, isn't it?
