All data from the Atlanta NWS office Hurricane Michael Hits Georgia October 10, 2018 [Overview] [Damaging Wind] [Wind Damage Photos] [Heavy Rainfall] [Tornadoes] Overview: Hurricane Michael made landfall along the Florida panhandle near Panama City on the afternoon of October 10, 2018 as a high-end Category 4 hurricane. Michael then moved rapidly inland, causing widespread wind damage along its path. Hurricane Michael was the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall along the Florida panhandle as well as the first major hurricane (Category 3+) to directly impact Georgia since the 1890s. In southwest Georgia, wind gusts as high as 115 mph were recorded in Donalsonville. Within the NWS Atlanta/Peachtree City county warning area, winds gusted over 70 mph in portions of central Georgia on the evening of October 10th, leading to widespread tree damage and power outages as well as severe crop damage, especially to cotton and pecan crops. Additionally, a few brief tornadoes in the outer bands of Michael caused sporadic damage in portions of the the area while heavy rainfall led to localized flooding. This infrared satellite image was taken as Hurricane Michael entered southwest Georgia as it maintained a Category 3 intensity on the evening of October 10, 2018. (Click the map to enlarge it.) Damaging Winds: Within the portion of central Georgia in the NWS Atlanta/Peachtree City county warning area, sustained winds of 40-50 mph with gusts in the 60-75+ mph range downed countless trees and power lines. Numerous trees fell onto homes and businesses, causing additional damage. The peak wind gust officially recorded within the local warning area was in Arabi, GA where a 76 mph gust was recorded. Even stronger wind gusts well over hurricane force (74+ mph) were recorded in southwest Georgia in the NWS Tallahassee county warning area. Power outages lasted up to a week or even a bit longer for some areas. Below is a map displaying many of the strong wind gusts recorded across the state during Hurricane Michael. Note: Wind gusts were likely stronger than displayed for a number of locations in central and south Georgia; however, recording instruments failed as electrical power and communications were lost. Wind Damage Photos: Widespread tree damage of this magnitude occurred in Cordele. Many homes were damaged by falling trees. Electrical infrastructure experienced significant damage in many areas of central Georgia. (Cordele, GA) Many large trees like this one were downed in Dodge County. (Courtesy Americus Times-Recorder) Heavy Rainfall: Rainfall totals reached in excess of 5" in some locations. Though the ground was relatively dry due to recent dry weather, these rainfall totals led to isolated instances of flooding, including a few roads that were washed out. This road near Dallas in Paulding County experienced a washout due to the heavy rainfall from Michael. (Courtesy: Paulding County Fire Department) Tornadoes: Three brief tornadoes touched down in the outer bands of Hurricane Michael on the evening of October 10th. See the specifics on these tornadoes below. 1) Peach County Tornado: A brief EF-0 tornado snapped a few pine trees along Carver Drive, just south of Fort Valley State University. Damage Path - Peach County County Rating # of Injuries KML Peach EF-0 0 Rating: EF-0 Peak Wind: 75 MPH Path Length: 1.8 miles Path Width: 100 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: October 10, 2018 Start Time: 3:32 PM EDT Start Lat/Lon: 32.4955 / -83.8795 End Date: October 10, 2018 End Time: 3:36 PM EDT End Lat/Lon: 32.5195 / -83.8916 2) Crawford County Tornado: Hurricane Michael spawned a high-end EF-1 tornado in Crawford County within its outer rain bands. The tornado first touched down along Avera Road southwest of Roberta, snapping a few small trees and branches near a residence just east of the Hammett Road intersection. The tornado continued west-northwest, crossing Pope Road and Carroll Road, snapping and uprooting trees with the high-end EF-0 range. The tornado continued to move west where it intensified to a high end EF-1 with estimated maximum winds of 110 mph along Flint River Estates Road. Numerous trees were snapped from 10 to 20 feet off the ground or uprooted, including many hardwood trees. Several homes along the road were damaged by falling trees. A detached workshop at one of the homes was completely destroyed. The survey revealed that the garage was open with the opening facing the direction of the maximum winds, which led to its complete failure. The tornado continued westward, snapping trees as it crossed State Route 128 where it damaged another residence with falling trees. The tornado continued west, crossing Hortman Road, where a few small trees and large branches were downed before lifting as it approached Walker Chapel Road. This outbuilding was destroyed by the tornado. 3) Fulton County (Atlanta) Tornado: A brief tropical-cyclone tornado touched down just a couple miles southwest of downtown Atlanta along Dill Avenue SW. Along this road, several large trees were snapped. This is where a Tornado Debris Signature (TDS) was initially observed and where a peak wind of 75-80 mph was estimated. The tornado quickly crossed Highway 29 (Lee Street SW), downing several more trees along Avon Avenue SW between Princess Avenue SW and Wyland Drive SW. No further notable damage was seen downstream from this point. November 1, 1861 A hurricane near Cape Hatteras, NC, battered a Union fleet of ships attacking Carolina ports, and produced high tides and high winds in New York State and New England. November records included 86 degrees at San Francisco, 97 degrees at San Diego, and 101 degrees at the International airport in Los Angeles. Fires claimed the lives of at least sixteen firefighters. Even though the accumulation was limited to the northeastern part of the state, snow flurries were observed as far south as the northern Atlanta metro area. October 31, 1846 Eighty-seven pioneers were trapped by early snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains that piled five feet deep, with 30 to 40 foot drifts. In Grady County, a 100 yard wide tornado struck and killed 2 people. An additional 28 people were injured. The temperature soared to 83 degrees at Minneapolis MN, their warmest reading of record for so late in the season. (The Weather Channel) October 31, 1965 Fort Lauderdale, FL, was deluged with 13.81 inches of rain, which brought their rainfall total for the month of October to an all-time record of 42.43 inches. Weather-related auto accidents resulted in three deaths and twenty-five injuries. Mount Wilson CA received 3.14 inches of rain in 24 hours. Yakima WA reported measurable rainfall for the first time since the 18th of July. The 103 day long dry spell was their longest of record. The low of 19 degrees at Cleveland OH was a record for October, and morning lows of 21 degrees at Allentown PA and Bridgeport CT tied October records. Nine cities in the southwestern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date, including Phoenix AZ with a reading of 96 degrees. Showers made Halloween a soggy one in the southeastern U.S. (The National Weather Summary) October 31, 1989 Halloween night was a soggy one in New England. Showers in the northeastern U.S. produced more than an inch and a half of rain in six hours at some locations. An invasion of cold arctic air brought an abrupt end to a week of "Indian Summer" type weather in the Great Lakes Region, and brought snow and subzero wind chill readings to the Northern Plains. In Colorado, Alamosa was the cold spot in the nation with a record low of two degrees above zero, and a Halloween night storm brought 3 to 6 inches of snow to the Front Range, and 5 to 10 inches to the nearby foothills. October 30, 1925 Nashville, TN, was blanketed with an inch of snow, their earliest measurable snow of record. For five days an inversion trapped impurities in the lower atmosphere over the Monongahela Valley killing 20 persons, and leaving more than 2000 others sick. The highest rainfall was recorded in Greenville (Meriwether County) where 8 inches of rain fell in a 24 hour period. A large number of bridges and culverts were washed out. High winds, associated with the heavy rains, damaged roofs and blew down trees near Covington (Newton County). Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across the central U.S. Temperatures warmed into the 80's form Texas to the Lower Missouri Valley. The morning low of 20 degrees at South Bend IND was a record for October, and lows of 18 degrees at Grand Rapids MI and 20 degrees at Fort Wayne IND equaled records for October. The low of 2 degrees at International Falls MN smashed their previous record for the date by 11 degrees. Syracuse NY received 2.9 inches of snow to establish a record for October with 5.7 inches for the month. South Bend, IN, equalled their record for October with a morning low of 23 degrees. International Falls MN reported a record low of 11 degrees in the morning, then dipped down to 8 degrees above zero late in the evening. Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced weak tornadoes near Snyder and Davidson, and produced hail two inches in diameter at Altus. Large hail damaged 60 to 80 percent of the cotton crop in Tillman County OK. Nine cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date as readings warmed into the 70's. Low temperatures across much of the area dropped into the low to mid 20's, which is about 20 degrees below normal. It was also only the fourth times since the Civil War snow had fallen in New York City in October. Heavy snow blocked railroads and interstate highways, and record cold accompanied the storm. Lander WY received 27 inches of snow, and the temperature at Big Piney WY plunged to 15 degrees below zero. (David Ludlum) October 28, 1987 Thunderstorms over the San Joaquin Valley of California produced three-quarters of an inch of rain in thirty minutes at Placerville, and caused numerous power outages due to lightning. Rain began to diminish in the northeastern U.S., but some flooding continued in Vermont, eastern New York and northern New Jersey. One inch rains in Vermont clogged culverts and sewers with fallen leaves, resulting in erosion of dirt roads. The temperature at Estes Park CO dipped to 15 degrees, but then soared thirty degrees in less than thirty minutes. (The National Weather Summary) October 28, 1989 A storm crossing the western U.S. produced 10 to 20 inches of snow across northern and central Wyoming, with 22 inches reported at Burgess Junction. Seven cities in the Lower Ohio Valley and the Upper Great Lakes Region reported record high temperatures for the date as readings again warmed into the 70's. Alpena MI reported a record high of 75 degrees. In Rome (Floyd County), one apartment building experienced minor flooding. In Duluth (Gwinnett County), around 25 cars were moved around in the parking lot of the Georgia Postal Distribution Center during a thunderstorm downburst. Fourteen of the cars sustained at least moderate body damage. Winds from a thunderstorm also blew down part of a brick wall on one end of the Scotland Yard Antique store. The damaged roof allowed water to come inside the store resulting in damage to some of the irreplaceable antiques. Fallen leaves made roads and sidewalks slick, and also clogged sewers. Rainfall totals of 1.55 inches at Newark NJ, 1.54 inches at Harrisburg PA, 1.27 inches at Scranton PA, and 1.22 inches at Atlantic City NJ, were records for the date. One F-0 tornado occurred in Crisp County and was on the ground for 10 miles from Warwick to Arabi. Thirty to forty structures sustained damage and two cars were overturned. Six people were injured in Crisp County. The other F-0 tornado occurred in Dodge County in the Rhine area. This tornado was short lived but managed to cause damage to a few structures.
