    November 1, 1861 
    A hurricane near Cape Hatteras, NC, battered a Union fleet of ships attacking Carolina ports, and produced high tides and high winds in New York State and New England. (David Ludlum) 

    November 1, 1966 
    Santa Anna winds fanned fires, and brought record November heat to parts of coastal California. November records included 86 degrees at San Francisco, 97 degrees at San Diego, and 101 degrees at the International airport in Los Angeles. Fires claimed the lives of at least sixteen firefighters.     November 1, 1968 
    A tornado touched down west of Winslow, AZ, but did little damage in an uninhabited area. (The Weather Channel) 

    November 1, 1987 
    Early morning thunderstorms in central Arizona produced hail an inch in diameter at Williams and Gila Bend, and drenched Payson with 1.86 inches of rain. Hannagan Meadows AZ, meanwhile, was blanketed with three inches of snow. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across the Ohio Valley.     November 1, 1988

    A strong cold front ushered snow and arctic air into the north central U.S. Snow whitened North Dakota and the Central High Plains Region. Up to five inches of snow blanketed Denver CO.     November 1, 2014
    Northeast Georgia received their first snow of the season, around a half inch to near 2 inches. Even though the accumulation was limited to the northeastern part of the state, snow flurries were observed as far south as the northern Atlanta metro area. Although snowfall records across northeast Georgia are somewhat limited, based on records that are available this was the earliest in the season that snowfall has been measured. The previous earliest snowfall at Blairsville was November 10 (1968) and at Helen and Cleveland it was November 12 (1968). (NWS Atlanta)

    Today in Weather History
    for July 6 

    July 6, 1893 
    A violent tornado killed 71 persons on its forty-mile track across northwestern Iowa. Forty-nine persons were killed around Pomeroy, where eighty percent of the buildings were destroyed, with most leveled to the ground. Photos showed most of the town without a wall or tree left standing. (The Weather Channel) 

    July 6, 1928 
    A hailstorm at Potter, NE, produced a stone which was 5.5 inches in diameter, and seventeen inches in circumference, weighing a pound and a half. (David Ludlum) 

    July 6, 1985 
    Lightning struck a large transformer in Salt Lake County sending a 200 foot fireball into the air and blacking out almost the entire state for up to five hours. (The Weather Channel) 

    July 6, 1986 
    Thunderstorm rains during the mid morning hours, and again during the evening, produced major flash-flooding at Leavenworth, KS. The official rainfall total was 10.37 inches, but unofficial totals exceeded twelve inches. At nearby Kansas City, the rainfall total of 5.08 inches was a daily record for July. (Storm Data) 

    July 6, 1987 
    Thunderstorms produced severe weather in twenty-one states east of the Rockies, with severe weather reported in Kentucky and Indiana for the second day in a row. A thunderstorm produced more than five inches of rain in one hour near Reynolds, IL. Rochester, NY, was soaked with 3.25 inches, a record 24 hour total for the month of July.     July 6, 1988 
    Thirty-six cities in the north central and northeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 98 degrees at International Falls, MN, and 101 degrees at Flint, MI, equalled all-time records.     July 6, 1989 
    Unseasonably hot weather prevailed in the southwestern U.S. Ten cities reported record high temperatures for the date, including Las Vegas, NV, with a reading of 115 degrees. Hanksville, UT, reached 112 degrees, Bullhead City, AZ, hit 120 degrees, and Death Valley, CA, soared to 126 degrees. (The National Weather Summary) 

    July 6, 2005
    Tropical Storm Cindy moved across much of north and central Georgia producing widespread damage from winds gusting to 60 to 70 mph along with hail up to 1 inch. Several tornadoes were spawned by Cindy, the strongest being an F-2 which occurred in Hampton in Henry County. The tornado touched down at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and traveled north northwest to just east of Lovejoy in Clayton County. At the Atlanta Motor Speedway alone an estimated $40 million in damages were caused by the tornado. In its path, this tornado damaged 229 homes, with 61 homes sustaining major damage. In total, Tropical Storm Cindy caused over $75 million in damages across north and central Georgia. (NWS Atlanta)

    February 4, 1961 
    The third great snowstorm of the winter season struck the northeastern U.S. Cortland NY received 40 inches of snow. (David Ludlum) 

    February 4, 1987 
    Gales lashed the northern Pacific coast and the coast of northern New England. A storm in the central U.S. produced five inches of snow at Rapid City SD. (The National Weather Summary) 

    February 4, 1988 
    A winter storm produced heavy snow from the Upper Ohio Valley to New England, with up to 12 inches reported in Vermont and New Hampshire. Strong northerly winds in the Upper Midwest produced wind chill readings as cold as 60 degrees below zero. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) 

    February 4, 1989 
    Two dozen cities in the south central and northwestern U.S. reported new record low temperatures for the date. The low of 14 below zero at Boise ID was a February record. A winter storm continued in the southwestern U.S. Alta UT reported 49 inches of snow in four days, Wolf Creek CO reported 66 inches in six days, including 28 inches in 24 hours, and up to 84 inches buried the ski resorts of northern New Mexico in three days.     February 4, 1990 
    A winter storm produced heavy snow in the northeastern U.S. Snowfall totals in Maine ranged up to 13 inches at Gorham, with 11 inches reported at Portland. Totals in New Hampshire ranged up to 14 inches at Franconia, with 13 inches reported at Portsmouth. A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain caused numerous traffic accidents in eastern New York State resulting in three deaths and fourteen injuries.     February 4, 1998
    A low pressure center tracked across southeast Georgia and then moved northeast up the Atlantic coast. Rainfall amounts from this system ranged from 2.5 to 4.5 inches over north and central Georgia from the 2nd to the 4th. Runoff caused widespread flooding over much of central Georgia, especially in the Oconee and Ocmulgee river basins. Rivers and creeks rose as much as 20 feet during the event, flooding nearby homes and businesses. In Laurens County 11 school children had to be evacuated from a school bus that had stalled in standing water. No one was injured, but the bus floated away down the Oconee River.

    February 4, 2004 
    7.15 inches of rain deluges Pinson, AL, setting an all-time record rainfall over 24 hours for the town. The Weather Doctor

    January 19, 1810 
    The famous "cold day" in New England. Gale force winds wrecked homes, and accompanied a sudden overnight drop in temperature of 50 degrees. Tragedy struck Sanbornton NH where three children froze to death. (David Ludlum) 

    January 19, 1933 
    Giant Forest CA received 60 inches of snow in just 24 hours, a state record, and the second highest 24 hour total of record for the U.S. (David Ludlum) 

    January 19, 1977 
    Snowflakes were observed at Homestead and Miami Beach in extreme southern Florida. (David Ludlum) 

    January 19, 1987 
    A storm tracking toward the northeastern U.S. produced up to 14 inches of snow in northern Indiana. Peru IN reported a foot of snow. Six cities in Florida reported new record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 88 degrees at Miami equaled their record for the month of January.     January 19, 1988 
    A powerful storm hit the central U.S. producing blizzard conditions in the Central High Plains, and severe thunderstorms in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Snowfall totals ranged up to 36 inches at Wolf Creek Pass CO, with 31 inches at Elsmere NE. Tornadoes claimed five lives in Tennessee, and a tornado at Cullman AL injured 35 persons.     Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds in eastern Texas and Louisiana. Tornadoes at Garland TX and Apple Springs TX each injured one person.     January 6, 1880 
    Seattle, WA, was in the midst of their worst snowstorm of record. Hundreds of barns were destroyed, and transportation was brought to a standstill, as the storm left the city buried under four feet of snow. (David Ludlum) 

    January 6, 1884 
    The temperature dipped to one degree below zero at Atlanta, GA. It marked the final day of a severe arctic outbreak in the South and Midwest. (David Ludlum) 

    January 6, 1987 
    A storm moving across the western U.S. spread heavy snow into the Central Rockies. Casper WY received 14 inches of snow in 24 hours, a January record for that location. Big Piney WY reported 17 inches of snow. (National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) 

    January 6, 1988 
    It was a bad day for chickens. Heavy snow in Arkansas, with totals ranging up to 16 inches at Heber Springs, claimed the lives of 3.5 million chickens, and snow and ice up to three inches thick claimed the lives of another 1.75 million chickens in north central Texas.     January 6, 1989 
    A "bonafide blizzard" ripped through south central and southeastern Idaho. Strong winds, gusting to 60 mph at the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, whipped the snow into drifts five feet high, and produced wind chill readings as cold as 35 degrees below zero.     January 6, 1990 
    Rain and gale force winds prevailed along the Northern Pacific Coast. Winds at Astoria OR gusted to 65 mph. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed over Florida. Five cities reported record high temperatures for the date, including Miami with a reading of 86 degrees. The hot spot in the nation was West Palm Beach with a high of 87 degrees.     January 6, 1996
    A winter storm dropped heavy snow across north Georgia, mainly north of a line from Rome to Toccoa.     An area of light snow moved across Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens, and Union Counties. Most locations only saw a light dusting of snow, but Gilmer County reported 1 inch of snow. Road problems were limited to icy or slick spots mainly on bridges and overpasses. (NWS Atlanta)

    January 9, 2011
    An upper level disturbance tracked across the northern Gulf of Mexico, drawing abundant moisture into the Southeastern U.S. Prior to the arrival of the moisture, a large, cool area of high pressure was entrenched over the southern United States, and this helped set the stage for one of the more significant winter weather events in years.  2" to a foot of snow fell from just south of the metro Atlanta area to the TN border. Areas south of the snow saw ice up to 3/4" thick.  Atlanta schools were closed for 5 straight days.

    November 17, 1869 
    Southwest winds of hurricane force swept the Berkshire and Green Mountains of New England causing extensive forest and structural damage. (David Ludlum) 

    November 17, 1927 
    A tornado cut a seventeen mile path across Alexandria and southeastern Washington, DC, injuring 31 persons. The tornado struck the Naval Air Station where a wind gust of 93 mph was recorded.     November 17, 1953 
    The temperature at Minneapolis, MN, reached 71 degrees, their warmest reading of record for so late in the autumn. (The Weather Channel) 

    November 17, 1987 
    A storm in the Rockies produced 21 inches of snow at the Monarch ski resort in Colorado, with 14 inches reported at Steamboat Springs CO. Early morning thunderstorms in the southeastern U.S. drenched Mary Esther FL with 4.43 inches of rain. Gale force winds over the Great Lakes Region gusted to 49 mph at Johnstown PA.     Another in a series of storms brought heavy snow to the mountains of the western U.S. Totals ranged up to 17 inches at Bob Scott Summit in Nevada. Winds around Reno NV gusted to 80 mph.     A "very remarkable storm of snow with high winds" produced 22 inches at Rutland in central Massachusetts. (David Ludlum) 

    October 27, 1929 
    A snowstorm dumped 27 inches upon Ishpeming, MI, in 24 hours to establish a state record. (David Ludlum) 

    October 27, 1962 
    An early season winter storm over New England blanketed northern Maine with 7 to 16 inches of snow, and southeastern New England with up to 3 inches of snow. Worcester MA received a record 4.7 inches of snow. (The Weather Channel) 

    October 27, 1987 
    Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy rain from Virginia to New York State. Fallen leaves made roads and sidewalks slick, and also clogged sewers.     October 27, 1995
    Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail occurred across much of central Georgia. These storms produced two F-0 tornadoes. One F-0 tornado occurred in Crisp County and was on the ground for 10 miles from Warwick to Arabi. Thirty to forty structures sustained damage and two cars were overturned. Six people were injured in Crisp County. The other F-0 tornado occurred in Dodge County in the Rhine area. This tornado was short lived but managed to cause damage to a few structures.     Good morning fellow Solo people! 🙂 Sounds like aliens to me. 
    I know we have a lot of people onsite for tomorrow's ProSolo, so this section has to to with this afternoon and evening. There will be severe weather in the area, please make sure everything is secure, and the car is in a trailer if you have one. 

    So please stay weather aware later this afternoon and evening. I will be around and making updates on the FB page if necessary.
     
    Soooo, for tomorrow and Saturday.
     
    Looking at the NWS hour by hour forecast, Friday may be dry for most if not all of the competition.

     
    Saturday isn't quite as good as much of the morning has damp conditions with light scattered showers around. At least we not seeing the deluge type rain that we saw last year.

     
    Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday look good for now! There is a cold front coming through that will drop the temperatures back down on Wednesday, but when or if any rain accompanies the front is this to be seen.
    Temps may look like this.

     
    But I know temps aren't what's really important, it's the rain.
    The GFS ensembles show about 0.30" of rain during the frontal passage next week, while the Euro comes in a little less at around 0.10". So for now, let's split the difference. The exact timing of that front is of course unknown right now, but we can pretend it's overnight Wednesday into Thursday for now. Don't worry. It will change.

    Car
    The wife was taking the car out yesterday and I wanted to get the exhaust sound. But it's still a phone so it is what it is. It actually sounds pretty good through the music system that's attached to my TV. You may hear a little "clink" sound as she starts up the hill. We think there is something in between the wheel and tire that is moving around. The guy that is doing the paint work is going to look at it.  As she backs out, you can see that the hood is a little scared up and the front end pitted. He's also going to try to sand the splitter and try to make it look close to new. 
    The exhaust uses the stock rear muffler system, but in front of that it has New Era Performance downpipes with a Vibrant 4” resonator and custom 4” single mid pipe. This is the car with Turbobay turbo's. Wish I had a couple of those snails on my car. 🙂 Maybe she'll let me drive. 😉

    The temperature at Pahala, located on the main island of Hawaii, soared to 100 degrees to establish a state record. (The Weather Channel) 

    April 27, 1942 
    A destructive tornado swept across Rogers County and Mayes County in Oklahoma. The tornado struck the town of Pryor killing 52 persons and causing two million dollars damage. (David Ludlum) 

    April 27, 1987 
    Forty-two cities in the western and south central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 87 degrees at Olympia WA was an April record, and highs of 92 degrees at Boise ID, 95 degrees at Monroe LA, and 96 degrees at Sacramento CA tied April records.     April 27, 1990 
    Thunderstorms produced severe weather in eastern Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorms spawned thirteen tornadoes in Texas and twelve in Louisiana. A tornado southwest of Coolidge TX injured eight persons and caused more than five million dollars damage. There were also eighty-five reports of large hail and damaging winds, with baseball size hail reported at Mexia TX and Shreveport LA. Records highs included 94 degrees at Charleston WV, 95 degrees at Baltimore MD and 96 degrees at Richmond VA. (The National Weather Summary) 

    April 27, 2011 
    An estimated 305 tornadoes between the 27th and 28th sets a record for the largest outbreak ever recorded, including two EF-5s, four EF-4s and 21 EF-3s. Arkansas through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, southern Tennessee, Virginia to Pennsylvania and New York were all affected. An estimated 300 died including 210 in Alabama alone. This brought the April total past 600, the most in any month in recorded US weather history. 

    What came to be the largest tornado outbreak ever across the United States spread into north and central Georgia on the 27th and into the early morning hours of the 28th. There were a total of 15 tornadoes during this outbreak in north and central Georgia. Thirteen people lost their lives and a 143 people were injured in north and central Georgia alone.     Squalls produced heavy snow in the Lower Great Lakes Region. Totals in northeastern Ohio ranged up to 14 inches at Harpersfield, and totals in western New York State ranged up to 14 inches at Sodus.     December 10, 1989 
    Heavy snow fell across the northern and central mountains of Colorado, with 24 inches reported at Steamboat Springs. Six to twelve inches of snow fell in the Denver and Boulder area delaying plane flights and snarling traffic. Heavy snow also spread across the Central Plains into the Mississippi Valley.     Sorry, I've been pre-occupied with a hurricane, so now I can re-focus. 🙂
    It's gonna be hot. There really isn't much to discuss, hot and dry are the two key words for the next 7 days. Oh... and no rain. These are the official forecast high temperatures. The DOW is in the top right corner of each image.





     
    Zero rainfall through 2 PM Thursday the 7th. Or so the Weather Prediction Center says.

     
    Dew points will remain in the 50's and 60's, so there won't be much in the way of humidity to add to the heat. All in all, not a bad forecast for the Nationals. I would take the heat over the rain any day, even though I hate the heat. I always found that the heat made me drive worse.

    The temperature in New York City's Central Park reached 72 degrees to establish a record high for December. The month as a whole was also the warmest of record. (The Weather Channel) 

    December 4, 1983
    An F-0 tornado briefly touched down near Bartow (Jefferson County). Two mobile homes were damaged injuring two people in the homes. Elsewhere in Jefferson County, high winds from the thunderstorms downed a church steeple and a barn, and damaged the roof of a house. (NWS Atlanta)

    December 4, 1987 
    A cold front crossing the Pacific Coast Region brought high winds and heavy rain to California. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 55 mph at Newport Beach CA, and Mount Wilson CA was drenched with 2.17 inches of rain in six hours.     December 4, 2002 
    An early season winter storm brought an expansive shield of snow and ice through much of the eastern U.S., from the lower Ohio Valley, southern Appalachians and into the Northeast. Snow accumulations of 4-8 inches were common along the northern edge of the precipitation shield, while a significant accrual of glaze occurred in the Carolina's. The storm caused at least 17 fatalities, mostly from traffic accidents (CNN). In the Carolina's, electric utilities provider Duke Power characterized the ice storm as the worst in the company's history, with 1.2 million customers or nearly half its entire customer base without power on the morning of the 5th. This surpassed electrical outages inflicted by Hurricane Hugo as it swept through the central Carolina's in September 1989.

    Severe thunderstorms brought large hail and high winds to much of north and central Georgia. Hail of 1 to 1 1/4 inch in diameter was quite common. One tornado, an F-0, touched down in Henry County near Stockbridge. The path of the tornado was 1 mile long and traveled through the Willow Spring Subdivision causing $150,000 in damages to homes.     2023 SCCA Solo National Championship Weather

    Good afternoon everyone!

    It's been a while since I've posted, but it's that time again! We are still pretty far out in time for most of the computer models, but a few of the ensembles may give us a hint as to what everyone might expect for the start of the Nationals.
    The Euro ensemble goes out to 15 days, so this is what Tuesday, September 5 looks like to the Euro in terms of temperature anomalies.

     
    The GFS goes out slightly further but not much. It's thinking warmer temps than the Euro

     
    And there are the temperatures. We need a few more days to see where the models take this, 

     
    Again, this only goes to August 31st. We do see rain from the tropical system (#9) that is currently in the Gulf, impacting Nebraska before the end of the month, but we just don't know much further than the 5th or so right now, so please check back.

     
    All of that being said, the GFS Extended and Euro Weeklies suggest that Lincoln will be among the hottest and driest places in the country for that week.

    January 24, 1963 
    A great arctic outbreak reached the southern U.S. The cold wave broke many records for duration of cold weather along the Gulf Coast. A reading of 15 degrees below zero at Nashville TN was an all-time record low for that location. (David Ludlum) 

    January 24, 1982 
    Chinook winds plagued the foothills of southeastern Wyoming and northern and central Colorado for the second straight Sunday. The winds gusted to 140 mph at Wondervu CO, located northeast of Denver. Chinook winds a week earlier produced wind gusts to 137 mph. (Storm Data) 

    January 24, 1987 
    Temperatures in Minnesota plunged far below the zero mark. International Falls MN reported a morning low of 35 degrees below zero, and Warroad MN was the cold spot in the nation with a low of 45 below zero. A storm developing in northeastern Texas produced severe thunderstorms with large hail in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Camden AR reported golf ball size hail.     January 24, 1988 
    A blizzard rapidly developed in the north central U.S. In just one hour weather conditions in eastern North Dakota switched from sunny skies, light winds and temperature readings in the 20s, to rapidly falling temperatures and near zero visibility in snow and blowing snow. High winds in Wyoming, gusting to 72 mph at Gillette, produced snow drifts sixteen feet high. Northwestern Iowa experienced its second blizzard in just 24 hours.     January 24, 1989 
    Heavy snow blanketed the Rockies and the Northern High Plains Region. Hettinger ND received 12 inches of snow. Wolf Creek Pass CO was blanketed with 16 inches of snow in just 24 hours. Severe cold prevailed across Alaska. Between the 24th and the 29th of January, a total of thirty stations in the state report all-time record low temperatures.     January 24, 1990 
    A deep low pressure system brought high winds and heavy snow to the western Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Winds gusting to 82 mph at Shemya reduced the visibility to near zero in blowing snow.     January 24, 2003
    A strong arctic cold front sent temperatures across north Georgia into the single digits. Hiawassee, in Towns County, recorded the statewide low with -2°F. Some locations in north Georgia failed to rise above the freezing mark for over two days.     A tornado struck the town of Berryville in northwest Arkansas killing 20 persons and causing half a million dollars damage. (David Ludlum) 

    October 29, 1956 
    A violent tornado, or series of tornadoes, moved along a path more than 100 miles in length from south of North Platte NE into Rock County NE. It was an unusually late occurrence so far north and west in the U.S. for such a storm. (The Weather Channel) 

    October 29, 1987 
    Severe thunderstorms in Arizona produced wind gusts to 86 mph at the Glendale Airport near Phoenix, baseball size hail and 70 mph winds at Wickenburg, and up to an inch of rain in fifteen minutes in Yavapai County and northwest Maricopa County.     October 29, 1988 
    Wintry weather prevailed in the Upper Midwest. South Bend, IN, equalled their record for October with a morning low of 23 degrees. International Falls MN reported a record low of 11 degrees in the morning, then dipped down to 8 degrees above zero late in the evening. (The National Weather Summary) 

    October 29, 1989 
    Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather in Oklahoma and north central Texas during the late afternoon and evening hours. Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced weak tornadoes near Snyder and Davidson, and produced hail two inches in diameter at Altus. Large hail damaged 60 to 80 percent of the cotton crop in Tillman County OK. Nine cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date as readings warmed into the 70's. For Marquette MI it marked their fifth straight day of record warmth. Arctic cold invaded the western U.S. Lows of 7 degrees at Alamosa CO and 9 degrees at Elko NV were records for the date.     October 29, 2001
    Unseasonably cold weather spread across north and central Georgia. Low temperatures across much of the area dropped into the low to mid 20's, which is about 20 degrees below normal. (NWS Atlanta)

    October 29, 2011 
    New York City received one inch of snow, the earliest they had received that much snow since records began. It was also only the fourth times since the Civil War snow had fallen in New York City in October. The storm also left over three million people without power including 62% of the customers of Connecticut Light and Power.

    First Snow of the Season in Georgia!
    Early on November 1, 2014, northeast Georgia received their first snow of the season! A strong upper level low dove into eastern Georgia and the Carolinas, bringing wrap-around moisture from the low pressure system to parts of Georgia. In addition, the area was in northwest flow with cold air being ushered into the state. This combination of precipitation and freezing temperatures brought the first snow of the season to Georgia. Even though the accumulation was limited to the northeastern part of the state, snow flurries were observed as far south as the northern portion of the Atlanta metro area! Overall snowfall accumulations ranged from 0.5-2 inches.
    This snow event was unusually early for the season. Although snowfall records across northeast Georgia are somewhat limited, based on records that are available, the previous earliest snowfall at Blairsville was November 10 (1968), at Helen it was November 12 (1968) and at Cleveland it was also November 12 (1968). Please note there is the potential for missing data at these sites.

    April 22, 1958 
    Portions of Montana were in the midst of a spring snowburst. Snowfall amounts ranged up to 55 inches at Red Lodge, 61 inches at Nye Mine, and 72 inches at Mystic Lake. (David Ludlum)

    April 22, 1967
    Severe thunderstorms spawned 48 tornadoes in the Upper Midwest. Hardest hit was northern Illinois where sixteen tornadoes touched down during the afternoon and evening hours causing fifty million dollars damage. On that Friday afternoon tornadoes struck Belvidere IL, and the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, killing 57 persons. (David Ludlum)

    April 22, 1987
    Unseasonably warm weather prevailed from the Gulf of Mexico to New England and the Great Lakes Region, with twenty-nine cities reporting record high temperatures for the date.     The temperature at Las Animas, CO, soared to 100 degrees to establish a state record for April.     April 22, 1990
    Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced golf ball size hail in Oklahoma, and also caused some flash flooding in the state. Thunderstorms over the Southern High Plains produced golf ball size hail at Roswell NM and El Paso TX. Easterly winds and temperatures near zero produced wind chill readings as cold as 50 degrees below zero for the spring festival (Piuraagiaqta) outdoor events at Barrow AK.     April 22, 2007
    The South Plains and Panhandle of West Texas were hit by an outbreak of severe thunderstorms. Between the hours of 5 and 6 pm, several thunderstorms developed across the western South Plains. Around 7 pm, a supercell produced a tornado which touched down around Fieldton (southwest of Olton) and then moved just south and east of Olton, doing damage to several structures and equipment. The thunderstorm continued to move northeast across northeast Lamb, northwest Hale, southeast Castro and southwest Swisher Counties, producing a long-lived tornado (along with hail up to the size of tennis balls). By 7:45 pm, the storm approached the town of Tulia in Swisher County. A tornado touchdown was reported in the town, causing major damage.     Eureka, CA, reported an all-time record high of 85 degrees, a record which lasted until September of 1983. (The Weather Channel) 

    February 17, 1936 
    The temperature at McIntosh SD plunged to 58 degrees below zero to establish a state record. (David Ludlum) 

    February 17, 1958 
    The greatest snowstorm of the mid 20th century struck the northeastern U.S. The storm produced 30 inches of snow in interior New England, including more than 19 inches in 24 hours at the Boston Airport. The same storm produced up to three feet of snow in the Middle Atlantic Coast Region, with 14 inches at Washington D.C., and 15.5 inches at Baltimore MD. The storm resulted in 43 deaths and 500 million dollars damage over the Middle Atlantic Coast States. (David Ludlum) 

    February 17, 1987 
    A couple of winter storms, one off the Atlantic coast and another over the south central U.S., produced snow and ice from the Mississippi Valley to the Mid Atlantic Coast Region. Freezing rain produced a coat of ice three inches thick in northern South Carolina, and 30,000 homes around Pee Dee were left without electricity.     February 17, 1988 
    Santa Ana winds in southern California gusted to 63 mph at Ontario. Heavy snow blanketed parts of Colorado, with 11 inches reported at Strontia. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

    Low pressure off the Washington coast produced more than a foot of snow in the Cascade Mountains, and more than three inches of rain along the Northern Pacific Coast. Spokane WA was blanketed with 13 inches of snow. Cold arctic air in the Upper Midwest produced all-time record high barometric pressure readings of 31.10 inches at Duluth MN, 31.09 inches at Minneapolis MN, and 31.21 inches at Bismarck ND.     February 17, 1990 
    The biggest winter storm of the season hit the Pacific Coast Region. In northern California, snow fell along the coast, and two day totals in the mountains ranged up to 67 inches at Echo Summit. Snowfall totals in the mountains of southern California ranged up to 48 inches at Green Valley, with 46 inches reported at Big Bear. Up to two feet of snow blanketed the southern Cascade Mountains of Oregon, and 20 to 35 inches were reported in the northern Cascades of Oregon. Up to ten inches of snow blanketed Seattle WA.     The temperature at Prospect Creek, AK, plunged to 80 degrees below zero, the coldest reading of record for the United States. (David Ludlum) 

    January 23, 1987 
    Strong winds ushered bitterly cold air into the north central U.S., and produced snow squalls in the Great Lakes Region. Snowfall totals in northwest Lower Michigan ranged up to 17 inches in Leelanau County. Wind chill temperatures reached 70 degrees below zero at Sault Ste Marie MI and Hibbing MN.     January 23, 1988 
    Northeastern Colorado experienced its most severe windstorm in years. A wind gust to 92 mph was recorded at Boulder CO before the anemometer blew away, and in the mountains, a wind gust to 120 mph was reported at Mines Peak. The high winds blew down a partially constructed viaduct east of Boulder, as nine un-anchored concrete girders, each weighing forty-five tons, were blown off their supports.     Low pressure brought heavy snow to Wyoming, with 18 inches reported at the Shoshone National Forest, and 17 inches in the Yellowstone Park area.     A Pacific cold front brought strong and gusty winds to the northwestern U.S. Winds in southeastern Idaho gusted to 62 mph at Burley.     January 23, 2003
    A strong arctic cold front sent temperatures plummeting across north and central Georgia. As the cold front moved through, temperatures dropped into the 20's during the day and into the teens by evening accompanied with northwest winds of 25 to 35 MPH with higher gusts. By midnight several locations across north Georgia were already below 10°F. This front also brought light snow resulting in 1 to 2 inches across north Georgia.

    The greatest ice storm of record in the U.S. produced glaze up to four inches thick from Texas to Pennsylvania causing twenty-five deaths, 500 serious injuries, and 100 million dollars damage. Tennessee was hardest hit by the storm. Communications and utilities were interrupted for a week to ten days. (David Ludlum)

    February 1, 1985 
    Snow, sleet and ice glazed southern Tennessee and northern sections of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The winter storm produced up to eleven inches of sleet and ice in Lauderdale County AL, one of the worst storms of record for the state.     February 1, 1987 
    A storm in the Pacific Northwest produced wind gusts to 100 mph at Cape Blanco OR, and up to six inches of rain in the northern coastal mountain ranges. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data) 

    February 1, 1988 
    Thirty cities in the eastern U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date, including Richmond VA with a reading of 73 degrees. Thunderstorms in southern Louisiana deluged Basile with 12.34 inches of rain. Arctic cold gripped the north central U.S. Wolf Point MT reported a low of 32 degrees below zero.     February 1, 1989 
    While arctic cold continued to invade the central U.S., fifty-four cities in the south central and eastern U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date. Russell KS, the hot spot in the nation with a high of 84 degrees the previous day, reported a morning low of 12 above. Tioga ND reported a wind chill reading of 90 degrees below zero.     February 1, 1990 
    Thunderstorms associated with an upper level weather disturbance produced severe weather across the eastern half of Texas during the late afternoon and evening. Four persons were injured at Waco TX where thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 80 mph. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 97 mph at Cotulla TX injuring two other persons.     February 1, 1999
    A mixture of rain, freezing rain, and sleet continued from the afternoon of January 31st into the morning of February 1st across northeast Georgia. Accumulations were mostly in the higher elevations on trees and power lines. Road surface temperatures were generally above freezing, but some icing did occur on bridges and overpasses.     The city of Denver, CO, was in the midst of a storm which produced 23 inches of snow in 24 hours, and at Idaho Springs CO produced 32 inches of snow. (David Ludlum)

    The temperature at the Civic Center in Los Angeles, CA, hit 100 degrees to establish an April record for the city. (The Weather Channel) 

    April 23, 1983 
    A mini-blizzard produced sixteen inches of snow at Laramie, WY, including a foot of snow in just eight hours during the night. (The Weather Channel) 

    April 23, 1987 
    Thunderstorms in the Atlantic Coast Region produced golf ball size hail and wind gusts to 67 mph at Anderson SC.     April 23, 1988 
    An intense winter-like storm brought thunderstorms to southern California, and produced snow in some of the higher elevations.     Salina, KS, was the hot spot in the nation with a high of 105 degrees. The high of 105 degrees established an April record for the state of Kansas.     April 23, 1990 
    Thunderstorms produced severe weather in West Texas and western Oklahoma. Thunderstorms produced tennis ball size hail at Lake McKenzie TX and at Garden City TX, and produced wind gusts to 90 mph at Gage OK. Thunderstorms drenched southeast Minnesota with heavy rain, with 6.6 inches reported northwest of Browndale. High temperatures were mostly in the 80s across the central U.S. The morning low of 67 degrees at Fargo ND and afternoon high of 91 degrees were both records for the date.     April 23, 2009
    A strong shortwave, embedded within northwest flow aloft, combined with a very unstable surface air mass to result in the development of numerous, large-hail producing severe thunderstorms.
