Good morning! Cold this morning but pretty close to normal for this time of the year. We have a weak wedge building in this morning (blue line) as high pressure to the NE forces colder air down the east side of the Appalachian's, and that's going to have over running moisture from the south and east bringing clouds and eventually rain to north Georgia. Since everyone wants to know what's going to happen tomorrow, let's go ahead and take a look what the NWS thinks. More specifically.... The NDFD (National Digital Forecast Database) forecast looks like this... And NAM is like this. It's not much and not…

Good morning! We have one departing system and a new one getting ready to dive down our direction this morning. The rain is almost over for us and I think I had around an inch of precipitation with this round. We're going to have another system close on its heels and that one may bring a chance for some freezing rain very late Tuesday into Wednesday. Thought from the Atlanta NWS office. There is going to be about a 12 hour window for freezing rain to fall, beginning roughly midnight Tuesday and continuing through noon Wednesday and the NAM is giving us this for freezing rain totals. Notice that the greatest amounts are along the ridge…

Good morning! A very active map this morning as we have a stalled cold front (blue line) over our area. To the north you can see drier dewpoints, to the south, warmer. The yellow line is down near the subtropical jetstream while another trough is digging into the 4 corners region of the southwest. What we're waiting on is a good push of cold air (purple) to come south so we can get a little action. 🙂 You want some action don't you? 🙂 I'm going to let the NWS do much of the talking today, so here you go. 🙂 I'm just not feeling the winter weather right now, but I am HIGHLY encouraged with this VERY active flow. If this keeps up this winter, I…

Good morning! We have a line of showers approaching the state this morning, but it should be getting weaker as it moves into Georgia, so rainfall amounts will be relatively meager today. The morning map (500 mb isobars & wind/temps) shows the upper level trough approaching the Ohio Valley and bringing showers and snow with it. This trough is going to bring some pretty decent snows for the northeast, and close on its heals is the next one which will bring even more. It's a great time to be in the New England states! Here's a look at the GFS and Euro snow totals for the northeast. The GFS is through 1 AM Wednesday and the Euro 7 am Friday. Man.. w…

Good morning! Great day yesterday wasn't it! I managed to drive to Roswell and back, wash two cars, and a bunch of other things before the football games came on, and then I promptly fell asleep. 🙂 I don't think I saw a single play. LOL! The big map (500 mb winds and isobars/temps) shows that the upper low that was out west has now opened up to a trough as it continues to make its way across the country. Notice up in the far left corner at that upper level low. That is the shot that "may" give us a chance for winter weather around Wednesday, but even if it does, it would only be a glancing blow and not much more than some wrap around flurries. Too early to real…

Good morning! The morning map shows our next weather maker that is starting to move over Arizona and being pushed along by a split flow off the Pacific. If we could just get rid of that, we'd probably be in business. That is an EPO that we don't like to see in the winter. The models say it's neutral right now but I call it "firehose". They are taking the EPO pretty positive and one reason we will have such a progressive flow. While we talking about teleconnections, I LOVE the look from both the GFS and Euro ensembles of the AO and NAO, just awesome! In the winter, a -NAO is the east based block, the -AO pushes air off the poles and toward the equato…

Good morning! Tranquil weather will continue through Saturday as high pressure across the central part of the country is in control of the area, and that will bring warmer (above normal) temps to our part of the world. The morning map (300 mb isobars & winds/temps)shows our next potential weather maker for early next week off the California coast, and that upper level low will drift eastward across the country over the next 4-5 days. We are going to be entering a very active period with the weather, and it's looking like we'll see multiple waves of precipitation and cold coming through, even though the cold has no real staying power right now (no blocking). I'm a…

Good morning! Nothing but clear cold skies this morning, and that's all we're going to have through the end of the week. The morning map (300 mb winds & isobars/temps) shows some cold temperatures across north Georgia this morning with what is most likely the coldest morning of the season. These are my highs and lows for today and yesterday. Since our weather is going to be nice with nothing to talk about until rain enters the picture toward the weekend, so let's look in the crystal ball to see if we can conjure up some snow. 🙂 We going to try to match up the tropopause temps with 500 mb anomalies and see if we might be able to get an idea …

Good morning! It's going to be another beautiful but cold day today and tomorrow but that will give way to warmer temps and sunny skies through Friday night. On the morning map (300 mb isobars and wind/temps/water vapor) we can see the two departing upper level lows to the right and another one out west over the four corners region. In between, cool dry air will bring sunny skies to our area through Friday, but that 4 corners low will introduce rain back into the forecast for the weekend. This week will be a slow weather week with high pressure in charge so there won't be a lot to talk about. I guess that's good but I'd rather be talking about snow…

Good morning! Another great late fall/early winter day yesterday and today will start out pretty nice (and cool) but some slight chances for rain will be moving in later today. On the morning map (500 mb isobars/surface winds/temps/water vapor) you can see the ULL to our southwest, and as that moves east, it will merge with the piece that split off of the ULL to our northeast as it it swings around and through our area. So we're going to have a small chance for some rain, but none of the models are too excited about it. The WPC nor NWS Atlanta think much will fall at all. The GFS gives us an idea …

Good morning! Beautiful clear skies greet the morning accompanied by some breezy winds (I had a 27 mph gust at 4:43 am), but those winds will slow down and the rest of the day will be beautiful. The morning map (500 mb isobars/850 mb winds/temps) show the departing upper level low that came through yesterday exiting stage right, and the backside of it is bringing those breezy winds and cold dry air with it. Those northwest winds will taper off as we go through the day today, and the surface wind gust on the NAM look like this through 7 am Sunday. Notice that the peaks and high ridges will see the highest winds. Not much going on …

Good morning! Hope everyone enjoyed the weather yesterday, because today is not going to be quite as nice. Rain is knocking on our doorstep this morning and it looks like most of the day will be rainy. On the morning map (500 mb winds and isobars/temps) you can see the upper level low that is pushing off to the northeast, and the area of rain that it is generating will continue moving our direction, and by later this evening the whole area will have pushed off to the east. Our rain chances today will be relatively light with 0.5"-1.5" of rain expected across north Georgia. These are the forecast rain totals through 7 am Saturday morning. …

Good morning! This morning we have some crazy eyed face on our map. Does anyone remember "Mr. Bill"? 🙂 This morning, Mr. Bill's left eye upper level low (you are facing Mr. Bill) is our old snow maker that is being pulled back north for recycling, while our next weather maker for Friday (yellow mouth upper level low) is pushing our way. Mr. Bill's right eye is a large area of high pressure (ridge) over the western US. Here's the legend. 🙂 It's hard to be too serious when the weather is nice. 🙂 Pour me some more eggnog! I guess I better let the NWS do the talking and we'll start with Friday. The WPC and NWS are sharing…

Good morning to all! A cold night has already given way to a warming trend this morning as my temps here have already risen several degrees since their low earlier in the morning. On the morning map (500 mb isobars and wind/temps) you can see our snow maker moving off to the northeast as it takes on a slight negative tilt. Over the southeast the red line indicates a little area of high pressure that will bring us some fair weather for a couple of days before the next system over the Rockies swings east bringing increased rain chances to our area. High pressure builds in far west behind the Rockies trough Basically nice weather through the …

Good morning! Our upper level low that was to our west yesterday, opened up and joined with another impulse rotating in the flow, and we now have a larger and stronger upper level trough. You can see the colder air wrapping around the base of the trough, and as the day goes on our winds will pick up and the cold air will come rushing in. So these are the thoughts from the NWS. Rain will mix with and change to snow across far north Georgia on Monday afternoon through Monday night. Any accumulating snow will be more likely at elevations above 2000 feet. Snow accumulations should remain below 1 inch with locally higher amounts possible in hi…

Good morning! We got some snow! Well... some of us got some snow, I hope everyone got to see some flakes flying if nothing else. I'm awaiting the first light of day to see some more pictures from everyone. 🙂 The big closed upper level low is lifting out to the northeast this morning, taking the snow with it. I think that had this storm been another 100-200 mules further south, we might have had a big one. We want to see the ULL track to our south, not our north like this one. North gets us NW flow events just like the one we had. If they go south... or whole different ballgame. Notice another trough starting to dig in out west over the Rockies... I'll talk about tha…

Good morning! We may not get a lot, but it looks like we'll see something, so let's jump right in to the NWS forecast discussion. I'll try to highlight the parts that I think are important for you to know. The first map I'll show you is the only map that doesn't require the "NOT A FORECAST"... because it is the official forecast. This is a pretty broad brush to cover the mountains. I think this better shows the potential. The NW facing ridgelines and higher peaks have a better chance of seeing some light snow, and that's what the NAM is showing in this image. Here are the latest model runs and what the…

Good morning to all! Did anyone get any rain overnight? I had just a little but not really enough to wet the ground. The rain has pushed east and the rest of the day should be pretty nice. Changes are looming on the horizon and we should begin to see the effects from those changes beginning tomorrow in the form of rain and thunderstorms. Let's see what the NWS has to say about Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center doesn't think that any severe weather to worry about will reach this far north. Rainfall amounts through next Saturday are forecast to look like this. I know you're not reading this because you…

Good morning! Another relatively mild morning for late November, and today and tomorrow are going to be the last of the nice warm days for a while. Below normal temperatures and unsettled weather are going to be settling in, so get out and enjoy today and tomorrow if you can! On the morning map (500 mb isobars and winds/temps/water vapor) we can see an upper level trough rotating counter-clockwise over the Hudson Bay area, and the main axis of the trough is swinging to the NE. It's moving pretty quickly and because of that, it's leaving a piece of itself over the southwest US in the form of a cutoff low (red circle). Since the low has detached from the flow, it…

Good morning! I'm getting my smeller ready for all the great aromas today... 🙂 Our exiting trough is zipping on out to sea this morning while our next weather maker is swinging down out of the Rockies, and that system is going to bring some heavy rain and colder air to north Georgia starting this weekend and into early next week. I think I'll let the NWS do the talking to start with... I know most of you don't want to know anything about the rain... so. Let's look at the ensemble mean for the 3 main models... Euro, GFS, and Canadian in that order. …

Good morning! It's Thanksgiving eve! 🦃🙂 I'm ready for my turkey! 🙂 But first things first, it's time for the weather! Our first closed upper level low is sitting over Kansas this morning and it has already started pulling in some very cold air back behind it. The map (500 mb isobars/850-700-500 mb winds/temps) shows those cold temps that are starting to pour into the country riding on strong northerly winds wrapping around the low. Although this first low is relatively weak and the energy with it will be pulling off to the northeast, I want to show a few characteristics of the low. This first image shows the 500 mb pressure anomalies, so below nor…

Good morning! Things are starting to get interesting folks... 😉 Still a long way off in weather days but the GFS has been going all out for snow here. Boy, do I have a lot to show today... hope you have some time. 🙂 FIRST... none of this is a forecast. We are tracking winter weather like you would follow a football game. You have good runs/bad runs just like you have good plays and bad plays. My team may do well (snow) or your team may do better (rain or nothing). We don't know the outcome until we get close to the end of the game. For all we know, it will be warm and sunny. For those that are new here, I do not make a snow forecast, that is the job of th…

Good morning! The cold front has pushed through the area and brought cooler and drier air along with it. The morning map (500 mb winds and isobars/dewpoints/water vapor) shows the upper level trough to our north. The trough is responsible for the weather here this morning, but it will quickly slide off to the east and be replaced by a weak area of high pressure that is sitting to our west. Closer to home, you can see the surface winds bringing in the cooler air. These are dewpoints, not temperatures. Well, you saw the snow on the Euro yesterday and today it's handed it back off to the GFS again. Back and forth between …

Good morning! Enjoying this great weather? You get one more day of it before things begin to change. We've been locked into this zonal pattern for too long now, but the atmosphere is starting to get restless, and we'll start to see the start of those changes beginning this week. The morning map (850 mb winds and isobars/dewpoints/water vapor/radar) show moisture beginning to increase in advance of an area of low pressure. That low will drag a cold front across our area tonight and someone may see a shower, but probably not. That low is lifting northeast, and as it does it takes most of the mechanism's that would cause the rain to fall with it. …

Good morning! It's going to be short and sweet this morning, I have another autocross to attend, this time with the SCCA. This will be my last one of the season because it it basically over. One more tomorrow if I wanted to go and then a National Tour event down at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil Ga (bet you'll have to search to see where that place is... 🙂 ) that I won't be going to. So... the weather. 🙂 We're all gong to have nice weather through Monday with just a few more clouds at night. This is a mid level high at 850 mb. All of our cold air is locked up in Canada right now, and it's going to stay there until we get some amplifi…
