Good morning! Well... that didn't quite work out as planned. The cold air is moving away this morning but you can still see some heavy snow falling on the east side of the Appalachian mountains across NC and VA this morning. And OH, look! Cold air to our northwest. Looks like the cavalry didn't arrive in time.. and that's the story of our winter storm. Not enough cold air. Period. I had more snow during the last event than this one and this one looked better. We don't really know how much snow fell yet, I did see a report of 2" up near the Appalachian Approach Trail So some of you in the higher elevations have snow, show me the pict…

Good morning! Snow is on the way! It's going to be a long day simply because the snow isn't arriving until tonight, so we get to trudge through computer models today while we watch the ULL slide across the southeast. Not a lot has changed in the forecast, we now have Winter Storm Warnings for 2-4" across the northeast GA mountains The official forecast looks like this. The models look like this NOT A FORECAST NOT A FORECAST NOT A FORECAST Here in Big Canoe this morning everyone is in the 30's for low temps. I don't make forecast, but sin…

Good morning! A lot of activity on the map this morning with troughs (blue lines) and ridges (red lines) sweeping across the country. It looks like the pattern is going to remain fairly chaotic for a while. NWS Atlanta We are now within the range of most of the short range models, and I'll show the NAM in a minute, but the ensembles are still very useful as each individual ensemble member is slowly coming into agreement with each other. I compared the latest runs to the old ones and they are very similar. I don't expect a lot of changes between now and Thursday evening, but that's where the NAM 3km/HRRR/SREF/WRF/NBM models start to r…

Good morning! Yes... it's 3:15 am and I'm up. That's what happens when you fall asleep too early on the sofa. 🙂 It looks like we're going to start seeing system after system roll though the southeast over the next several weeks. On the morning map you see the exiting systems and trough (blue line on eastern US) while a tall narrow ridge follows. Close behind that, another trough is forming (blue line near the west coast), and that is our Thursday/Friday system. There is LOTS of energy flying around that will bring many opportunities over the next several weeks. Here are loops from all three major models showing 24 hour snowfall for the next 1…

Good morning! Well... I was going to hold off on saying it's going to snow later this week... but it looks like it's gonna snow later this week. 🙂 I will add some caution to that statement. One, not everyone will see snow, and two, the temperatures are only marginal right now. More on that below. The morning map shows the cutoff upper level low over out area bringing some colder temps to us this morning, and that will continue to drift east through the day. Today's weather is not interesting, so we'll save that for the end, so let's go ahead and see what the thoughts are from the Atlanta NWS office about our weather for Thursday and Friday. …

Good morning! The morning map shows an upper low to our north with a firehose Pacific flow today, but we're making baby steps in the right direction. It is still a zonal flow thanks to zero blocking on the west coast side of things. Someone needs to turn off the faucet over there and shut off that flow. 🙂 The thing I like is the undercutting of the flow beneath the low. As those tracks push lower and lower, the greater our chance for winter weather here. I think that over the next several weeks we're going to see an uptick in those chances, and after that, I feel like it's Katy bar the door. When you follow the weather long enough, you start to get a sense for change…

Good morning! What a dreary day for New Years Day, I think we stayed in the clouds all day long. Today will be different as the trough/low that brought us the rain moves out and high pressure moves in. On the map this morning, you can see that high located in the center of the country, and that high will be bringing us generally sunny skies through Tuesday. There may be some showers for the far east areas of north Georgia as as a cold front swings through but it won't amount to much for most of us across north Georgia, and tomorrow should be sunny and dry with cooler temperatures. I see the clouds off to my southeast this morning and we'll see how far they advance t…

Good morning! There is a mess going on across the central part of the country on this New Year's morning, and all of those orange colors represent freezing rain. You can keep that up there as far as I'm concerned. You can also see the culprit of this mess, the upper level low that is sitting over Oklahoma. That low is moving north-northeast this morning and will be responsible for our rain today. The SPC has placed us in a "Marginal Risk" outline for severe weather today. Excerpt from the Day 1 SPC discussion... While the SPC has us in a "Marginal" risk, I don't think north Georgia (north of metro Atlanta) will see…

Good morning! We're starting off mild and moist this morning with Gulf moisture overrunning the cool air in the wedge and bringing damp rainy conditions to north Georgia today. You can see the big upper level low sitting down over Mexico, and normally we would be cheering that on and awaiting a big snow, but not this time Here is how that low is going to track, and this is not ever a track that would bring snow to us. For that to happen we'd want to see the low track right along the Gulf coast. So while we won't see any winter weather, the low and the front are strong and we will see the potential for thunderstorms at the least …

Good morning! Well, the nice days are over and the rain is returning. The next chance for Sun is Sunday. 🙂 Works out perfect. On the morning map (500 mb winds and isobars/temps) you can see the split flow over the western part of the US, while our weather maker for tomorrow and New Years Day is starting to rotate out of Mexico as it starts to move east. Right now we have the southeast ridge holding on and deflecting these systems northward. Over the next several weeks we'll see that ridge begin to weaken and start to allow a low storm track across the southeast. Temperatures in the "wedge" are always cooler than…

Good morning! Our next storm is gather steam out west and will likely create a severe weather event for the southeast on New Years Eve. The main severe weather threat is not over north Georgia. This is NWS Atlanta. Storm Prediction Center Day 3 Outlook I jumped ahead to look at the real weather, but let's back up just a little and check out today and tomorrow. Before I end it today, I want to share a great thread from meteorologist Anthony Masiello. He shared it on Twitter but I wanted to capture it so that it was easier to read and follow. It has to do with the upcoming SSW (Sudde…

Good morning! Rather tranquil weather in store for the next several days, and then things may turn a little stormy. We're in a zonal flow at the upper levels right now, so it makes for a boring weather pattern. Our New Year's weather maker is sitting off the coast of California right now. We now have a slight chance for showers this morning, mostly across the top tier of counties but hardly enough for me to mention. Even though ice pellets are mentioned, we should not see any winter precipitation. I do have a video of sleet falling at 44 degrees at my old house in Gwinnett, so it's not to say it can't happen, I just don't think it will today. …

Good morning! I hope everyone had a wonderful White Christmas! Not bad eh? Well... at least for those people that had one. It's too easy for me to forget that I moved to the mountains and I forget where I came from, and I do know that most areas outside of the mountains didn't have snow on the ground. So to those people I feel your pain. Been there, done that many times. I feel pretty confident that you are going to see your chance this winter. It's another cold morning today. Here's a look at my temps. The coolest day/night are the average temps from 6am-6pm (day) and 6pm-6am (night). Atlanta set a record yesterday. According to …

Good morning! Here we go! Today should be an interesting day and fun to watch, so let's dive in! The upper level trough is barreling down on us this morning, and in advance we have mild temperatures and rain. Notice the very cold air diving down out of the Rockies... if nothing else, we're going to have a couple of days and nights with some VERY cold temperatures. First, we have three separate areas for Advisories and Special Weather Statements. Starting from the top of the state first. The we move south for the next group of counties. And finally, the last group of counties. So you've read the…

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone got their Christmas wish! I'm snowed in here and since it isn't going above freezing, we're stuck for today. Oh the horror.... 🤪 BRRRRRR, it is brutal outside this morning. Take a look at temps across the SE. 2 degrees ion Crossville TN right now. There is some light snow still falling across north Georgia, and there could be another small shot today, so keep on the lookout! Here at Big Canoe it's cold as well. I am at 19 degrees at the house. Here's a picture I took earlier. By the time you see this, I'm not sure what you'll see, but right now you can watch snow showers pa…

I’ll be home for Christmas was written in 1943. The individual who wrote the lyrics wrote them from a view of a soldier overseas in WW2. Through the years Home life has changed drastically. Society has fallen to the point that many children now are shuffled about and home is despised by many. But Home is not just a place. It is a condition of heart. Home is where you belong. Home is where you feel Joy, safe and secure. Home is where you are fulfilled. And that is what Christmas has always been about— bringing ALL Home. In Luke 2 we find Caesar Augustus taxing ALL the known world and “ every man coming HOME to his own city.” From that moment on the go…

Good morning! It's 1:58 am, I'll try to be quiet. I'll make this quick update, get some more sleep and update the update when I wake up. 🙂 Our Christmas system is slowly getting it's act together across the Rockies, and it is starting to create Snow Squalls. The 00z runs are in for the GFS, still running for the Euro, and this is the GFS ensemble. There appears to be more members showing snow, and some members have a decent amount. The probability of accumulating snow >=1" looks like this. This has gone up. This is a loop of the same basic map The GFS has the main surface low over Ohio, but i…

Good morning! How'd that first day of winter work out for you? Not bad eh? 🙂 My son and his wife came up to spend a few days with us, and since he has 4 wheel drive, we decided to go take a ride on the Jeep Trail that they have here in Big Canoe. It was a great ride and we finally got to see the old cabin, the still, and three waterfalls! Can't wait o go back in the summer and sit next to the falls. 🙂 20201221_122644.mp4 The morning map showing our Christmas storm that is starting to take shape over the Pacific Northwest. That trough will be ejecting across the Rockies and once it hits the plains it begins to strengthen. Now that the sys…

Good morning! Well folks... the models have, for the most part, given up on any appreciable winter weather for Christmas for for our area. It looks like that if you want some accumulating snow, you'll need to head up to Gatlinburg. 🙂 That is not to say we won't see some snow on Christmas, but it certainly isn't going to look like Vermont. Here's where you'll find the best chance for snow. I'm going to say "not a forecast"... You can see that the models are still holding out the hope for a little dusting and flurries, but right now, that looks like it. Anything less than blue on the map means little to no chance in my b…

Good Sunday morning! Well... tomorrow is the "official" start to winter even though mine started 20 days ago. You'll catch up. 🙂 On the morning map, our overnight system is exiting stage right and that will leave us in a "normal" pattern for this time of the year, at least through Wednesday. No reason to beat around the bush, let's jump right in. This is NWS Atlanta This is not a big system and moisture will be limited, but it looks like there will be something to it. It's funny how models flip around, some models see things early, some don't pick up on things until you get close in time. The Euro has perked up some a…

Good morning! A very active map this morning as we approach the start of astronomical Winter, and we're only 6 days away from Christmas! Troughs (in blue) are flying all over the place and we have a big push of Pacific moisture flooding the west coast. Those red arrows show that flow, and that also indicates a +EPO (Eastern Pacific Oscillation) You can also see that on the teleconnection charts. The flow will be reduced some as we head toward Christmas. We ideally want to see a negative EPO to force that Pacific flow north. Finally hearing talk from the Atlanta NWS office on the potential for snow for Christmas Eve and…

Good morning! I have had a few people contact me about signing up here, and the good news is that anyone can signup anytime just by coming to be page and clicking on the link that says "Sign in" or "Sign up". Registration is never closed! I appreciate all of you that have signed up! 🙂 The 500 mb pattern shows high pressure moving over the southeast while a new trough forms over the central US. Looks like a fairly active pattern is in store for the US for at least the next 7 days. But let's jump into the local weather and what may be in store for us here. But what we really want to know is what about Christmas? Tight lipp…

Good morning! First, if you are a guest and reading this, as of 8 pm tonight, you will need to be a member to view and comment on post in the forums. It's easy, quick, and painless to join, just think of a "display" name and enter your email address and that's it. You'll get a confirmation email with a link to confirm. At that point you're good to go. 🙂 8 days 'till Christmas and my true love gave to me... one white Christmas! 🙂 Yes, I'm still dreaming, but the models are fueling those and the closer we get, the more promising it starts to look. That doesn't mean its going to happen, so don't go rushing out to buy milk and bread and don't go telling everyone I …

Good morning! Most people across north Georgia are getting their normal mid 30's to 40's and a cold rain this morning, or typical winter weather in Georgia. There are some higher elevations that are below freezing and some icing may be occurring in those areas, but for the most part, the lower elevations are fine. The only places around me that are freezing or below right now (5:23 am) are near Mt. Oglethorpe (3288 feet) and Sassafras Mountain (3340 feet). I would expect that anyone above 3000 feet is seeing freezing temperatures or close to it. The models are showing relatively warm 925 mb temps and they are below freezing only in isolated are…
