Good morning! I'm getting an early start this morning but I have no idea why. 🙂 Sometimes you just wake up and you can't go back to sleep. so here I am! Looking at the morning map (500 mb winds and isobars/temps) we see a flat zonal flow. This pattern is sending warm moist Pacific air instead of cold dry air from the north, and until this changes, our weather stays the same. There is no blocking to disrupt that flow, and without that, cold air stays bottled up in Canada. I had to do a video today since the gif creator wasn't working on Weatherbell, but this is a loop from the Euro showing the 500 mb pattern and winds. Notice how we start to t…

Good morning! Well... I got up early enough to make the post. 🙂 Luckily, it will be quick since the only thing to really talk about is the cold front that will be passing through today. The morning map (temps/water vapor/radar) shows a stream of moisture associated with the sub tropical jet racing out ahead of the cold front in a narrow band. Since there is little moisture for the front to interact with, the line of showers is very narrow. As that line approaches our area it is expected to weaken further and may people may miss the rain entirely. At least that's the plan. 🙂 We will have some gusty winds today in advance of the front, and the hi…

Good morning! It's a little chilly out this morning but not as cold as they thought it would get, I think the winds kept the temperatures from falling as far as expected. But there are places in the mountains that are below freezing this morning, so there is some cold air around. Looks like Blairsville went below freezing shortly after midnight and is still below as of 6 am. I am keeping this short and sweet this morning since nothing has really changed since yesterday. I'll let the NWS do all the talking today, I'll just highlight what I find important. Here in Big Canoe this morning out temperatures looked like thi…

Good morning! Nice fall days are always like "Groundhog Day", we get the same thing over and over and over, and we're going to have this same weather through Sunday. That's a long time to talk about nothing. 🙂 The morning map shows some pretty cool temperatures across north Georgia, and tomorrow morning they will be even colder. There is a Freeze Watch out for tomorrow morning, so if you need to bring some plants/pets in, tonight and tomorrow night will be the nights to do it. Union and Towns have already had freezes, so they are left off this map. Here in Big Canoe, this is what it looked like at 7:10 am. Colde…

Good morning! We are all waking up to colder temperatures and gusty winds this morning and those will continue through through tomorrow night. Looking at the temperatures on the morning map, notice the warmer temps just outside the mountains but also notice how it's colder just south of Atlanta. Since our winds are generally out of the north this morning, we're seeing some downslope warming. When the winds come down off the mountains, the air is compressed and warms as it descends. The winds will diminish some as ew go through the day but they will pick back up tomorrow morning. These are 925 mb winds so roughly 2500-2800 feet. This morning 7…

Good morning! It certainly was a beautiful day yesterday and today should be just like it and maybe a hair warmer. Now... you may ask, just how warm is a hair? The answer later in the post. 😜 The upper level pattern across the US is zonal, so no major amplification in the pattern means the status quo for us across north Georgia. We are currently under the influence of a high pressure area to our north, and you can see (700 and 850 mb isobars/surface winds/temps) some of the cold temperatures associated with it over the Ohio Valley WS/MI. In the center of the country there is a mid level trough that is making its way across the central plains, and the associated…

Good morning! Well... there isn't going to be a lot to talk about for the next 7 days. With a forecast like this, there is nothing to explain! The morning map (MSLP/dewpoints/water vapor/surface winds) show Eta pulling out to the northeast and taking those moist dewpoints with it. Over the central part of the country we have a large area of high pressure. Normally when you see a central high, it will be stormy and wet on either side of the country, and that is generally the case this morning. All of these systems are moving west to east in a zonal flow, so no big changes in the pattern until that zonal flow amplifies. Our rainfall…

Good morning! Well... the rain is over for a little while as Eta is moving out to sea and taking the moisture with it, so a little cooler and drier air is moving in to replace it. On the morning map (10m winds/temps/water vapor) you can see roughly where the cold front is located, and all of that orange coloring is drier air that is now filtering in to our area. Starting today, we're looking at 7 days of very nice weather, with the only fly in the ointment being Sunday with a VERY slight chance for a shower/drizzle across the northern areas as the next and more meaningful cold front comes though. That also means I won't have much to talk about. I k…

Good morning! Here we are 1/3 of the way through November and instead of cool crisp weather, we have warm moist tropical air and breezy winds just like you'd have at the beach. 🙂 The temperatures are pretty evenly distributed this morning, maybe just little cooler up in the higher elevations, and that is probably due to the winds as much as anything. The red circles are stations that apparently have a pretty decent NE to east exposure for their weather station. It looks like I'm still recording the highest wind readings in the area and over the last three days the winds (wind run) have traveled more than 700 miles past my house. I've averaged 9-10 mph for those thr…

Good morning! I'm trying to figure out how to merge both the North Georgia Weather post along with this post each morning. Since I would end up duplicating a lot of the content between the two post, it really only makes sense to combine them together. I will do the "big picture" portion at the beginning and the Big Canoe section toward the bottom. That way if you don't live in Big Canoe, you don't have to read my drivel about our weather here, 🙂 but the Big Canoe folks can read about the bigger picture if they want to. Does that sound like something that might work for everyone? It just takes a lot of time to come up with two totally different post when the weather i…

Good morning! Yesterday ended up being my windiest day here in Big Canoe so far. I had a gust higher than when Zeta came through (34 mph vs 33 mph) and the highest daily wind run reading I've had here in Big Canoe. This morning I've already had a 25.3 mph wind gust (3:50 am), so no shortage of wind here. Average Wind Speed and Max Gust (mph) Link: http://www.daculaweather.com/4_wx_temp_detail.php Wind Run (miles) Here's what it looked like while you were sleeping at 4 am this morning. It looks like my station is seeing the strongest winds right now. Cooler on top and warmer below today. Link …

Good morning! Another windy night for some of us and those winds are still blowing this morning! At least the temperatures are nice, so at least that keeps the winds from feeling so chilly. 🙂 One way meteorologist measure winds is by a measurement called "wind run". The definition is: "Wind run is a meteorological term used to categorize or determine the total distance (or amount) of the traveled wind over a period of time." I keep records of the wind run from my anemometer and yesterday was the highest wind run reading I've had since I moved the anemometer to the roof... 218 miles. Imagine it this way. Imagine if my anemometer moved at the same s…

Good morning! Very mild temperatures in place everywhere this morning. The winds have picked up and that mixing of the air blends the temperatures. Those winds are going to continue through the beginning of the week as high pressure to the north and Eta to the south create a pressure gradient which in turn creates the winds. Here's a look at the 925 mb winds (~2700-2800 feet today) with streamlines. Notice the flat high pressure to the north and then Eta to the south. The winds from both the high and low combine to bring a strong easterly fetch off the Atlantic Ocean. The winds at this level are forced to go around and to the south of the mountains…

Good morning! Not much to say about the weather when the days are like yesterday. Could you ask for a nicer fall day? 🍁🍂 Very mild temperatures this morning that are running 10-20 degrees above our normal low of around 42, so certainly not a typical crisp fall morning. And those temperatures are going to remain mild for at least the next 7 days as we start to get an influx of moisture across the area. Increased moisture always raises those nighttime temperatures and acts to limit those during the day. We will have more clouds around and most of those will be high clouds today as the moisture increases in the mid levels of the atmosphere, but eventually we'll sta…

Good morning! We're going to keep this one short today as I don't want to sound like a broken record. Everyone does remember what a record is? 🙂 Temperatures this morning are slightly above normal and these lows will be warming up as the week progresses into the weekend. This would be the "normal" lows for today. And these are the normal highs for today, and once you see the forecast, you'll notice that they are right about normal. There was a very slight chance for a shower or two during the weekend but those chances have now been delayed until Tuesday. Eta is still an unknown threat. I've …

Good morning! At least we're waking up to relatively calm conditions today, unlike the last three or four, and our temperatures are pretty mild. There is an interesting pattern to the temps this morning though. Notice the temperatures to the east, there is even a 34 degree reading just outside of Big Canoe. But then notice what those temperatures do as you go up in elevation. With calm winds, the cold air will settle and pool in the valleys and radiational cooling really starts to do its thing. When the winds are higher the air mixes and helps to blend the temperatures to make them more even. Look just south of Big Canoe, two temps in the 30's, and then just inside …

Good morning! Temperatures this morning aren't as cold as yesterday and it looks like we have a little bit of a temperature inversion going on. The valleys are much cooler this morning and even seeing some temps at or near freezing. Higher up, we're warming up with many of us in the low to mid 40's. And believe it or not Sanderlin has one or the warmer temperatures around. The reason is that that temperatures at the 925 mb level, or roughly 2500 feet, are warming and have been since about midnight. Here's a little animation showing the warming at that level and you can watch those temperature erode as the day progresses. This goes from 1 AM until 3 …

Good morning! We're waking up to some clear skies, cold temperatures, and brisk winds this morning. Ahhhh.... fall! I'll go ahead and tell you that there isn't much to talk about with the weather right now. Nice but uneventful sunrise this morning. That's McElroy to the left in this image. Temperatures this morning around Big Canoe look like this. We can see a couple of sites reporting 32 degrees, but everyone else is in the low to mid 30's. Had the winds calmed down, everyone might have dropped to the freezing mark, but when the winds are strong, it mixes the air and prevents radiational cooling from doing its job. We should have calm…

Good morning to all! This will be the first morning post for Big Canoe, it adds a little more time for me to prepare but I'll try to keep it as short and concise as possible. The plan is to have more specific weather information for this community and to try to get a better understanding of the micro-climate that we live in. With such a wide variation in elevations and ridge/valley configurations, it makes it difficult to come up with a one forecast fits all post. On top of that, everyone's exposure is different regardless of the altitude, so what might be true for your neighbor down the street might not be true for you. Here's a look at the temperatures aroun…
