Good morning!!! The bulk of the rain has shifted to our north, and we're left with low clouds and drizzle as we start the day. WPC rainfall amounts have decreased from the last couple of days. This goes through next Saturday. Areas in the wedge are cooler than the ridgelines and areas to our west this morning. Great example of how the wedge can impact our temps. And our 7 day forecast. Even though the rainfall amounts have decreased, there are no sunny dry days in the forecast. Stay dry and enjoy the day! Have a great Saturday!

Good morning! The rain has begun. π The band of rain you see in this image will increase in coverage as the day goes on, so no breaks for you! π This was the radar when I started the post... it is different now of course. π The 7 days WPC rainfalls amounts continue to climb, and now look like this. The WPC Hazards map has shifted the heavy rain outline to include most, if not all of north Georgia. Other than the rain, there isn't much weather to talk about. It's very mild with light rain falling over Big Canoe this morning... glad I got the cars washed and tucked away. π …

Good morning! What a great day we had yesterday! Even up here at 1950 feet I hit a high of 71.5ΒΊ F yesterday (and my high for the month), and yesterday was also my warmest day of the month with a 6 am to 6 pm average temp of 61.2ΒΊF. Not bad for a February day! It probably won't be quit as warm today since we'll have a slow increase in cloud cover as the day goes on. The rain returns tonight ahead of an approaching wave from the west. Notice the very flat zonal flow across the central and eastern portions of the US, while a new trough dips down and approaches the 4 corners region of the country. What is going to happen is that we'r…

Good morning! There is nothing going on anywhere in the country today. Nice spring weather is what I'm reading, which means I shouldn't have a lot to talk about. π We all could use a little break from me. LOL! π The WPC rainfall forecast through Sunday and you can see that the mountain areas north Georgia may see several inches of rain. But what is concerning is what I'm seeing on the GFS parallel this morning, because between now and March 11th, it's bringing almost 10" of rain to north Georgia. Here's a zoomed in look Here's the Euro and the GFS Para through 240 hours. You can see th…

Good morning! Perfect day yesterday and another one is in store for today. You can see we're in a zonal flow right now and that means mild temperatures and increasing chances for rain. Notice that most of the cold has now left the country and has been replaced with much more pleasant temperatures. You can also see some of the drier air over the south and southeast, and that will allow our afternoon temps to shoot up toward 70 degrees today. Here's the NWS outlook for the next 5 days or so. The WPC rainfall forecast still brings a considerable amount of rain to the north Georgia area over the next 7 days. This first image are rainfal…

Good morning! We're waking up to some rain showers this morning as a weak trough moves through the area. "Warm enough" means no winter weather and I'm just not seeing anything ahead of us. Looking at the GFS/GFS para/Euro, the next 10 days will have us above normal for temperatures. Looking at our precip, the ensembles see above normal precipitation over the next 10 days, and although the bullseye is to our north, we are in the above normal swath. The latest deterministic model runs look like this for the next 10 days. I suspect warm and with off and on w…

Good morning! A nice cold start to the morning under mostly clear skies across north Georgia and today is going to be another beautiful day. I actually got out yesterday and washed the wife's car, seems like it's been weeks since I've been able to do that. This will be another short and sweet post this morning as the weather is still in "boring" mode. π Usually when it's boring our weather is under control from high pressure, and that is the case again today as a high pressure is located over the eastern US, while another trough begins its push over the central part of the country. That trough will drag a cold front over the area on Monday and bring us our incr…

Good morning all! lots of cold air around this morning. Check out those temps to our north and west. We'll gradually start to warm up as the week progresses, and the only real blemish in the weather will be some rain on Monday. Nothing. But... a few days ago I mentioned March 3-4 as a potential last gasp shot at some snow, and the parallel GFS is continuing to show that chance, except the timeframe is now March 1-2. There isn't a lot of other support at the moment but this model has been sniffing something out around this period for the last day or two, so I'm going to continue watching. Other models have precip falling around this period so…

Good morning! Ok... so we're going to have some boring weather for a while, I could use a little break. I just seem to have a lot going on right now and could use a little time to get my stuff in order. π I have two cars I'm making modifications to, a new media room project that is just getting started, and I'm working on a new site for the folks here in Big Canoe, so I feel like I'm being pulled in a dozen different directions. π But my issues aren't your issues, so I'll just stick to the weather. π If you go to the blog section here on this site you can see some of what I've been doing if you are so inclined. The cold air is still hanging on across the centra…

Good morning! Did you wake up to any thunder this morning? π I had a pretty good clap of it near me that woke me up. The bulk of the rain is pushing off to the east and will be out of here in a few hours. I'm pretty sure that everyone is above freezing this morning. You can see the freezing rain in the Carolina's and Virginia this morning, and some wrap around snow to our west. NWS Atlanta I wouldn't say our chance to see some falling snow is zero later tonight, so we'll watch that area to our south and west to see how it develops it at all. The weather is "meh". That is a highly technical meteorol…

Good morning! It's going to be a little busy today with the chance for some freezing rain and sleet across north Georgia. Our weather maker is off to our west right now and is bringing sleet and snow all the way down to the Gulf coast, and all of that will be sliding our way through the day and evening hours. Let's go right to the current advisories and warnings. For NE Georgia NWS Atlanta A very active pattern is in store for us for a while. Rainfall through Friday will look like this. Then add a little more to get this 7 days rainfall total. It's cold in Bi…

Good Tuesday morning! Cold air is surging into the state this morning from the west. 4 degrees in Memphis, 13 in Nashville, the teens in far south Louisiana... all of those cold temps that were to our west are shifting this way. Luckily for us it won't be as cold here as it was there. But... many of us have already hit their high for today, it's down hill from here. Like I mentioned, the temps today have peaked for most people. This is what they will look like through Friday. Rainfall through Friday morning looks like this. Here's why we are thankful we didn't get the winter weather and cold that Texas …

Good morning! Lots of nasty weather to our west and that will be on the increase today. Let's be thankful that is over there this morning. But that doesn't mean that we are out of the woods just yet. We may even have a Winter Weather Advisory later this morning, we'll see. Hang in there folks, this isn't over. And even further west over Texas... Rainfall amounts through Friday morning look like this. We're just fine here in Big Canoe this morning, it's the overnight hours we need to worry about, especially for black ice. Note there is a chance…

Good morning! Still locked into the clouds and fog this morning, and it's not going away anytime soon. The morning map shows the bitter cold still hanging on over the central part of the country. While it's a little different from a wedge, you can see that the Rocky Mountains act as a block for the cold air just like the Appalachians do. High pressure over the Dakota's has clockwise rotating winds that are pushing against the Colorado mountains. Look at those surface pressure gradients. That heavy dense air can't go over the mountains, so it's forced south toward Texas. Our next weather maker is what you see exiting the Rockies right now. …

Good morning! Well... No sunshine for you today! I guess you're probably still sleeping and listening to the rain fall. π I say just go ahead and stay in bed, because almost all day will be like this. And tomorrow. And for the next 7 days... at least it's not 40 days and nights even though it might feel like it. π At least we're finally cold and not warm, I mean it is still winter. But we're just not cold enough to see winter precip. You can see that at the time I grabbed this image, I was 54 degrees yesterday, today 36.5, so close to a 20 degrees drop. I had a decent wind gust at 3:13 am and that made for a bone chilling 26.5 wind chill. I know, it's not that …

Good morning! We are Georgia Strong. But not in a good way. π We do have a wall around the state protecting us from the bitter cold and freezing rain, so that is a good thing, even though I'm disappointed that we're not cold and snowy. You can see the next system that is taking shape out west over the four corners region while the cold air stays locked over the central part of the US. Funny that the models saw the cold coming, but just didn't get the placement quite right for us. Just a hundred miles or so would have taken us from a cold rain to freezing rain so in this case, I think I'm happy it didn't make it this far. You saw what happened in Texas, and the damage an…

Good morning! A big mess is getting underway over the central part of the country where a LOT of freezing rain is going to fall. I know everyone here wants to see some winter weather, but you DON'T want to see what they are getting ready to have. Some of these go out into the future a little bit, but you get the idea. That is a mess. There are going to be some people without power for a very long period of time and in some bitterly cold temperatures. I love winter weather but I don't love freezing rain so I'm fine with that staying where it is. Speaking of messy, we've only looked at our winter weather…

Good morning! It's a cold morning across much of the US today, but not here! I just now dropped below 50 degrees and you can see the southeast is the warmest place in the country! YEA! π The maps is showing 500 mb winds and isobars and water vapor. Because it's so cold everything shows up light blue/white except where it isn't cold like here. The NWS can do the talking today. As you can see, there are a couple of near term opportunities but nothing too exciting right now. The next two images are for Tuesday. Notice the low and it's track. Almost due north out of the Gulf. What the heck. We almost NEVER see a due north path from the …

Good morning! A broad area of very cold air resides over the north central part of the country this morning, and that cold air is struggling mightily to move south. I know everyone likes to put the "blame" on the southeast ridge, but you need to understand that the southeast ridge is only a symptom of the pattern, not the cause. The location of the cold air is dictated by some negative factors that are raising their ugly head right now. I told a group yesterday that the cold was coming and going to last... and that's partially true, it just may not push far enough to grace us with its presence. I see multiple problems, and and they are big ones. The…

Good morning! Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day and today should be pretty much the same, but we will see some higher clouds returning this afternoon in advance of our next system that will arrive tomorrow. A large broad trough is covering most of the country this morning with some VERY cold temperatures. These were the temps and their anomalies at 6 am. Notice the average US temp was 20.1 degrees with -44.9 as a low, and 67% of the country was below freezing. Temps over Canada are brutal and that will be our source region for our cold air that's coming up. Here are some current anomalies. Spe…

Good morning!!! Well....? Did you get any snow is the question? One last round of snow/rain is passing through this morning, so get up so you and the kids can see it! Did you notice how it was snowing when it was in the 40's yesterday? π And you worry about it not being cold enough to snow. π We're waiting on all the snow reports, but I've seen 4"+ in Habersham county so we know the NE corner got some decent snow. We'll see how @Preston and @KingOfTheMountains did over in Rabun County but I know Preston was over 3" on his last report. Speaking of reports, thanks to all of you for all of your pictures and reports yesterday, it's a…

Good morning! Let's jump in. I'll keep it short this morning because it's going to be a very long day... π Here's a look at the maps. OFFICIAL FORECAST SHORT RANGE HIGH RESOLUTION DETERMINISTIC Cold down below with clear skies this morning in Big Canoe, and we are under a Winter Weather Advisory. More throughout the day, please check back here for the latest updates.

Good morning! Before we start... do you like snow? Because if you do, this post is for you. π Not everyone will see snow BUT.... the mountains and top tier or two of counties look like they will, and maybe not just a little bit. βοΈ Just for reference, our system is near Washington state this morning and it came ashore over British Columbia last night. There are actually two pieces to the storm as there is another one diving down behind it out of Canada that will phase will the first wave to form the southeast system. How those two pieces interact and how far south we can get that interaction will partially determine how this plays out. Models have c…

Good morning! Active weather pattern that is going to be difficult to figure out, so hang on... it is going to be a bump ride. Messy and not well defined. To me those are fun times π They may or may not end up being fun times in the end, but we have to wade through it anyway. So to do that, we have to fall back on the ensembles pretty heavily right now. Here's the new GEFS 06z. I see three potential periods. Friday, VERY low chance, Sunday, much better chance, and the end of next week we need to watch. All the models have been hinting at the 12-15th for a potential storm, and that period was lining up favorably with the teleconnection…

Good morning! I know everyone is getting discouraged with the models, and that's one reason I added the comment yesterday about how our past February's have gone. You never know in Georgia. We can go years without an appreciable snow, and then we can have 3-4 in one season, so it really is feast or famine here. I know the hopes started falling when the cold went away on the models but I had to smile. How often do we really get zero degree weather? I mean really. Not only that, we generally have our best snows when the temp is between 28-32 degrees, we don't need brutal cold to get that. Now it would be nice to lock it in with the cold, …
