Good morning! We now have a "High Risk" Day 1 Severe Weather Outlook, so today is going to be nasty. On the morning map I've overlaid the SPC outlook area so you can see how much of north Georgia is in the outline. The map shows winds at 850/700/500 mb, dewpoints, and 500 mb isobars. The rain you see is roughly where the warm front lies, and that will be pushing northward through the day. Behind the warm front, we'll have a strong flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and that surge our precipitable warm values to more than 2 standard deviations about normal. This showed the PW values at 8 pm last night, and you can see that 1.35" is the max fo…

Good morning! It's very quiet across the US this morning, but that calm weather won't hold on for long. A new trough is digging in over the Four Corner's Region and will be advancing east through the day today, and it will be our potential severe weather maker tomorrow. NWS Atlanta Discussion We are very close to the Moderate Risk area again, but we don't have a wedge to protect us this time. Tornado probabilities... Wind probabilities... And hail probabilities... The severe parameters are looking impressive, and much more so than last time, yet you aren't hea…

Good morning! While today won't be a "beautiful" sunny day, it won't be too bad of a weather day. The rain should hold off until this evening, so you ought to be able to still get out and enjoy the day. The morning map (dewpoints/surface pressure isobars/surface winds and 850 winds) shows our next weather maker over OK that will slowly push our direction, while a surface low spins off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina. Our flow is still being influenced by the surface low to the east, but that will pull away and allow a stronger southwest return flow to take hold over our area. That means moisture and temperatures will be on the increase for today. …

Good morning! Yesterday was one of those off and on days, at times it was really nice, and others it was cool and damp. Today should be more on the "nice" side of things as we'll be in between systems. We still have a weak wedge pushing down the east side of the mountains, and that is bringing some drier air to our area this morning. The in-situ wedge is being formed by the weak surface low to the south. It's not the typical wedge that we see here, those are the result of a strong high pressure to the north, this is mainly caused by the low pressure spinning Atlantic moisture into the mountains where it in turn gets forced southwest. The S…

Good morning! We still have a lot of dry air around this morning, and that is indicated by the orange color on the water vapor image today. But notice we have a little weak coastal low off of the coast from Jacksonville, and that is bringing some cloud cover and high level moisture over Georgia. The clouds should be the extent to what we see here today, although the far eastern areas could possibly see a light shower. The WPC rainfall totals look like this through Sunday, with the bulk of the rain falling Thursday/Friday. Flash flood guidance says it will only take ~1.5" of rain per hour to create flash flooding …

Good morning! Spring has sprung! I enjoy each season twice a year since I observe meteorological spring and astronomical spring, and you too can have as much fun as I am! 🤪 Another little but of information, the 18th and 19th the sun rose at 90º and this morning the sun rose at 89º or 1º north of due east in the sky. From this point forward, it will continue to move north until June 6th when it will reach an angle of 61º. It will rise at that angle until July 5, when it will start it's slow decline south again. This is the forecast and as you can see, no weather to talk about for a few days. That gives me a chance to actually get some things done h…

Good morning! It won't be hard to get the forecast correct for the next 4 days... unlike yesterday. I was very glad we didn't have any severe weather, but I'm always disappointed when the forecast doesn't go as planned. In order for people to have confidence, a forecast has to verify, and if it doesn't, it's no different the the "boy who cried wolf". I'm sure the NWS/SPC will study what happened and why (I mean we already know what happened and pretty much why). I think a meteorologist is always leaning toward the safety of others, and they would rather err on the side of caution. The potential was there, the severe parameters were there... but the wedge refused to b…

Good morning! Well... that ended up being a non-event. If you want to place blame, then place it on the wedge. I mentioned that the wedge can be our friend if there is the potential for severe weather, and it certainly was this time. Our temperatures and dewpoints are on the rise this morning, but it's a little to late to have much of an impact on the showers and thunderstorms entering the state right now. There actually isn't even much lightning associated with it, it's mostly just rain. We can still see some gusty winds, but without the thunderstorm threat, that will be less than anticipated as well. Sorry about the false alarm, all the signs were there for a very…

Good morning! As anticipated, we now have a "High Risk" area for severe weather this morning. Fortunately for us it's to our west, but that doesn't mean we won't see any severe weather... we will. It just won't be as bad as some other folks will have it today and tomorrow. NWS Atlanta I always go look upstream at the office that will be impacted more heavily than us. This is NWS Huntsville NWS Birmingham This is a very situation for points to our west and we'll need to watch for the erosion of the wedge as well as where the wedge boundary is, so we can see where the thunderstorms setup here. As you ca…

Good morning! The rain has started and it's relatively cold this morning, at least compared to what we've had for the last several days. The infamous "wedge" has pushed in from the northeast and I'm down to 42.6º F at the moment (5:51 am). Here's what the wedge looks like on the map this morning, these are dewpoint temperatures which is an indication of how dry/moist the air is at the surface. That my friends is some very dry air in North and South Carolina, and as you can see, that wedge has pushed far into Georgia. We can expect thunderstorms to form along the boundary between the warm moist air and the cooler and drier air. Those boundaries beco…

Good morning! We have a big difference in dew points this morning, as everyone to the north and east of the magenta line have drier and cooler air in place, thanks to a building wedge pushing down the east side of the Appalachians. We'll start to see overrunning rain showers developing as the morning goes on, so the day will will be on a downhill slide. Our main focus this week will be on the heavy rainfall and the potential for severe weather. Anything in parentheses is my comment) Went to check out the analogs to see what past matches could be found for the upcoming event, and this is at 72 hours or valid 8 pm Wednesday nig…

As you can see, I didn't make a post yesterday. We have guest here all weekend and this morning I'm heading to the track with my car, so I'm going to squeeze this one in before I go. Today will be the last nice day until at least Friday, so I hope you can get out and enjoy it. This is going to be a very active weather week, and we need to watch the frontal passage Thursday that may bring some potential for severe weather. Yes... it's that time of the year. We're sandwiched between a couple of upper level lows, so that leaves us under control of high pressure today, meaning warm temps and dry weather. The numbers on the map are dewpoints and the isobars are at the 50…

Good morning! One more nice sunny day before the clouds return, and those will be followed by some rain as we start the new work week. The morning map shows the winds and isobars at 850 mb (~5200 feet over north Georgia this morning). Remember, 850 mb (or any other pressure) is not a fixed altitude. As the pressures increase, the altitude of the 850mb pressure level increases. As the pressures decrease, so do those altitudes. You can see that we're under the influence of high pressure, and at this level you can see the direction of the wind flow around the center of that pressure. As the winds flow across the Gulf, they pickup that moisture and feed it nor…

Good morning! That surface high pressure is still hanging off the southeast coast, and the return flow at the surface is slowly creeping our way. These are dewpoints, and you can see we are still on the dry side of things, but notice the 50 and 60 degree dewpoints increasing in the central part of the country. If we move up to almost 5000 feet, we see the return flow has already started, and that's the reason you see the clouds around that level this morning. We're not expecting a lot of rain over the next week, and much of it will fall on Monday and Tuesday. This is the WPC rainfall forecast in 6 hour chunks. The time i…

Good morning! You know... after a while I get antsy with weather that never changes. It's not that I don't like sunny warm weather, I do, I just don't like a week or two in a row. I know... I shouldn't complain, and I'm not. I just want to see a change.... as long as it waits until Monday. 🙂 Here are two images that are the same except one shows surface pressures and the other one shows the pressures at 500 mb or roughly 18,000 feet. This one shows the surface pressures. Our weather is being controlled by the area of high pressure at the surface that is sitting over the Atlantic and the eastern coastline. Clockwise wind rotation is bringing a return flow o…

Good morning! Another day like yesterday except warmer, and then another day, and another day, and another day.... 🙂 High pressure at the surface is sitting on the Atlantic coast line this morning, and in another day or two we'll start to see a return flow of moisture off of the Gulf but still not enough to bring us any rainfall. Here's a look at our high temps through Monday This week is Flood Preparedness Week, so I wanted to share a few images from the National weather Service that I hope you find interesting and informative. Good morning! Looks like high pressure is in charge of our weather this morning and that is bringing clear skies and cool temperatures to start the day. That is going to continue to be the story as we go through the work week, and the chances for rain appear to be slim to none through at least Sunday. These are 850 mb winds this morning and you can see the high is centered over Alabama. The dry air makes for cool night time temps, but on the flip side, it also makes for warm days, and that warmth will be increasing as we go through the week. The only saving grace to the fire conditions is that the winds will remain low, otherwise we would…

Good morning! We're gonna keep this short and sweet this morning. The large trough that is responsible for the cool weather is moving out and high pressure is moving in, and that means sunny skies and warming temperatures for the next 6-7 days. So basically nice weather through next weekend and that means I have absolutely zero to talk about. Aren't you glad? 🙂 It's still not a great day to burn, so keep that in mind. Here in BC this morning we're cold, but we'll shoot back up to the mid 50's today and it's all uphill from here. And the forecast.... not bad eh? Hope ev…

Good morning! Some VERY light showers are traversing the area this morning, but the vast majority of what you see is not reaching the ground. The models were threatening some snow for this morning, but I didn't mention it because I didn't think it would happen... and so far it hasn't. The upper levels are cold enough to make some flakes, but it's warm down below and extremely dry, so pretty much everything you see here is evaporating. Our temperature anomalies for the next 10 days might look like this. "Not too hot. Extra chocolate. Shaken, not stirred." 🙂 These are the 24 hour max temps. Just a normal mornin…

Good morning! VERY cold to our northeast this morning as a large upper level low spins its way off the coast. Here across the southeast, we're under the influence of high pressure (the "hump" in the isobars). The little upper level low over Oklahoma will move southeast and to our south, taking any chance for rain with it, while behind the low, we see more high pressure building in, and that is going to leave us with clear and dry weather for the next 7 days. Here's a look at our 7 day rainfall totals. Nada. Zilch. Zero. Notta chance. 🙂 Since there is no rain in the forecast for the next 7 days, there are no excuses for n…

Good morning! No weather to talk about. Have a great day. 🙂 😛 Really... there isn't much to talk about. On the big map this morning we see another trough digging in around the 4 Corners region out west, but for us high pressure will continue to build in and provide some nice dry weather for the next 7 days. These are dewpoints and you can see that the vast majority of the county is very dry. So this is all you need to know. With such low humidity and precipitable water values, we are going to have increased dangers from fire hazards. There are a lot of missing weather stations on the Wunderground map this morning…

Good Monday morning! We're starting off the morning with some rain showers and mild temperatures across north Georgia as a cold front approaches the state. This front will continue to push south this morning bringing an end to the rain later in the day, and sliding in behind the front are some cooler temperatures, so today won't end up as warm as it was yesterday. The big map shows the line of showers and the cooler temps behind the front. The wind arrows are 850 and 700 mb winds. The official NWS rainfall forecast looks like this through Thursday. While north Georgia isn't getting soaked like some other areas, it is not entire…

Good morning! Just another day in paradise... 😉 The rain is starting to push out and in its wake will come clear skies. I can see the clouds that have already pushed to my south, so most everyone should be in the clear soon. Most of the rain fell over south and central Georgia. Basically... nothing going on. We're starting out on the cool side of things but we will warm up to around 60 later today. And look at the forecast. All of that previous doom and gloom goes out the window and now it only looks like Saturday is the only day with a chance for a shower, and right now that chance is very, very small. …

Good morning! How'd that first day of spring work out for you. 😉 Not exactly like spring was it? The area of rain in this image is moving generally west to east. The wind arrows are at 850 mb (~4800 feet) You can see the rain riding a boundary between the higher and lower areas of precipitable water values. The bulk of the upcoming rain will fall to our south. The official rainfall forecast through Friday morning looks like this. Keep in mind that while March is not normally a month where we have snow, it is not out of the question. NOT A FORECAST Even the older version…

Good morning! The last day of the month and the last day of meteorological winter! In the meteorology world, tomorrow is the first day of spring. YEA! 🙂 I guess? Looking at the big map this morning you can see the rain over the Ohio Valley that is moving off to the northeast and a new trough digging into the 4 Corners region of the southwest. Instead of temperatures, these are dewpoints this morning. Notice how most of the south has dewpoints in the 60's except for our little corner of the world where we are still in the 50's. That will change as the day progresses. The wedge is responsible for the cool temps and lower dewpoints, but that will…
