Good morning! One system exiting and more looming on the horizon. Love this time of the year when the weather gets active, and now we're going to see if it will produce for us. 🙂 Some areas in the northeast are reporting 30+ inches of snow this morning, could you handle that much here? 🙂 I don't know about you, but I sure would like to try it out to see! 🙂 Nothing going on until Friday, so let's move ahead a little and see what the NWS here in Atlanta is thinking about the period starting Wednesday night. You did read that correctly, Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday. 😉 Just clarifying. 🙂 In other words, the models are all ov…

Good morning! I have a few updates if you are up early. The NWS is going to issue a Winter Storm Warning for Fannin, Gilmer, and Murray counties for 2-4" of snow. They will also be issuing a Wind Advisory for much of north Georgia (not sure the area). More info shortly and I will continue adding to this post.

Good morning! Last day of the month! Everyone is waking up to a cold rain this morning with temperatures hovering around the the freezing mark for some of the higher elevations. We should be fine for temperatures this morning as the temps are already warming. Tomorrow may be another story, and we'll take a look at that shortly! A big winter storm is unfolding across the upper mid-west and into the Ohio Valley, with lots of snow falling. All of this is setting the stage for a return of winter for the southeast. This is the "official" NWS forecast. But here are several models and their opinions about the matter…

Good morning! Another cool start to the the morning with increasing clouds as the day goes on. Looking out the window toward the northeast I can see the clouds pushing in already, and by later tonight some light rain will arrive, with some of the higher elevations seeing some freezing rain/sleet at the onset. If any falls it won't last long as the temperatures will warm above freezing before morning. 7 am Saturday through 7 am Sunday The ensembles are still showing a little love for the north Georgia mountains for Monday, so there is still hope. This is all wrap around snow which usually doesn't give us much, but the uppe…

Good morning! I'm seeing really good things on models this morning... 😉 The morning map looks like an Omega Block pattern which would have me worried if the flow wasn't so progressive. Omega Blocks tend to want to hang around but this one will keep right on moving east thank goodness. As you glance at the image, notice the extremely cold temps in NW Canada. Those temps are going to start pushing south and east over the next week or two, so get ready for a return to winter. I'm seeing all kinds of opportunities over the next several weeks as the models continue to struggle with the changes. On the GFS I counted 4 opportunities, so we'r…

Good morning! It's just a little bit colder this morning than it has been! 🙂 Lots of cold air is bottled up across Canada and it is slowly bleeding into the lower 48 states. and it is starting to look like the models are now trying to push that cold air south. This is what will bring the cold air south. A lobe of the tropospheric polar vortex will break off and pinwheel south over the eastern US. When that happens, this is the response at the surface. In addition to the cold air, the models are showing some large and deep troughs invading the eastern US as well. The setup for those is unknown this far out, but…

Good morning! Looks like I'm "Stuck in the Middle with You" this morning. 🙂 Yes, everything is a song to me. 🙂 The front that brought our thunderstorms yesterday lies stalled out to our south, while a new cold front has stalled to our north. This is just normal winter weather for Georgia. 🙂 Rainfall will look like this through noon Thursday. And this through next Wednesday. It is extremely cold across the northern most US and across Canada this morning. These were some of the lowest temperatures across Canada for the last 24 hours. This was the US including Alaska. …

Good morning! How did you sleep with the thunderstorms around? 🙂 It's weird being IN the clouds when there is lightning around. It almost reminds me of thundersnow when the whole sky lights up and glows with each flash. And once again, north Georgia was protected by a weak pseudo wedge which reduced the intensity of the storms, as it took a long time for the warm front to make it all the way north. For the most part the rain has moved out of the western part of north Georgia but some folks still have some showers at the moment, but that will be pushing south and east as the morning progresses. What you see on this map are dewpoints and not temperatures. It makes it …

Good morning! Looks like we have some light showers passing west to east across north Georgia this morning, and those will continue off and on throughout the day and into tomorrow. There could be some rumbles of thunder today and a chance for a strong storm or two tomorrow, but I think that if there is any severe weather, it would remain to our south in the warmer and more favorable environment. The warm front is situated right about here. It's gotta do some traveling to get here during the day, and one reason it won't make it this far north. These are dewpoints that will be surging northward through the day. You can see…

Good morning! The isobars and wind arrows are at the 300 mb level and show the raging Pacific and subtropical jet flowing unabated across the country, and those winds over our head are moving at 100-120 knots today. It's hard to bring cold air south with winds like that. Once again, I'll let the NWS do most of the talking. Not much rain through 7 am Thursday. Here's the image I shared yesterday for comparison. Here's a look at the temperatures and their anomalies for the week. This first image shows the high temperatures starting today, the day/date are at the top right of each image. …

Good morning! One more beautiful day before the clouds and rain return later on Sunday. High pressure is in control of our area but it will be sliding east today, while the western low follows close behind on its heels. The combined return flow from the low/high will quickly increase our rain chances starting late Sunday. Again, I want to show up how difficult it is to make a forecast right now. This is the WPC rainfall forecast I shared in the post yesterday. Today's forecast, same time period. That's a BIG difference. Remember that this forecast only goes out 7 days, so this is the difficulty that not only the m…

Good morning! We're starting off pretty dry this morning and I'm not sure how far north the rain might get, but I'm thinking probably not any further than you see here. I want you to notice how the forecast are verifying as well as the amount of precip. I'll touch on that in a minute. The bulk of the rain will stay to our south today as another wave moves to the east, and the increase in moisture will keep our temperatures well above normal for most of the day. Since we just have normal weather to talk about, I'll let the NWS do most of the talking. If you look at the WPC rainfall forecast, no rain for north Georgia through Sunda…

Good morning! I'm in the clouds this morning with rain falling and 41 degrees. Most of north Georgia is hovering around the 40 degree mark with light showers, and those will continue for the rest of the day. You can see a small surface high over the Gulf that is pumping moisture our way. The arrows are 850 and 700 mb winds. Since it's relatively quiet, I'll let the NWS do the talking. These are the WPC forecast and the first image is rainfall totals through Sunday morning, and the second image shows the totals through Thursday morning. This is why you can't watch the deterministic runs right now. New run on the left, …

Good morning! Did you get a little bit of rain last night? My station says I had 0.06" so not much here. Imagine if we had been cold enough, and every time we had moisture pass through it snowed! It's stuff dreams are made of I know, but I had to go back and look at my rainfall. This is December and January. We can start on meteorological winter which is December 1 and we'll assume a 10:1 ratio for snow. The first image is December and if I add correctly, it looks like I would have had a little more than 43" of snow. YEA!!!!! 😞 And for January at least 15.8". What a wild ride a winter like that would be. But I'll just have to …

Good morning! Another nice day across north Georgia today, we may have a few more high clouds and a little less sun, but not bad for mid-winter with highs in the low to mid 50's. Zonal flow... two words we HATE to hear in the winter. Let's look at some features on the map this morning. We have another upper level low over Hudson Bay feeding cold air across the northeast part of the US, but notice that the bulk of the cold air is still locked up in Canada. Out west we have a building ridge will bring a -EPO for 3-5 days, but it will quickly fade. There is another ULL forming near the four corners region that will be another weather maker for us when it eventually…

Good morning! Did anyone see any flakes last night? Meh... I saw something but not sure if it was rain or snow flakes, but whatever it was it didn't last long. That one doesn't count. 🙂 I know people look at the maps and see orange colors for temperature anomalies and start to panic that we're going to torch. Let's keep everything in perspective... these are our normal highs (now and the 22nd) and lows for this point in the month. And our normal lows... Notice how those compare to the forecast. We will only be above normal for lows and that's only because of the clouds and rain. So while some of you…

Good morning! Yesterday marks the fourth time I've seen snow this season here in Big Canoe. Granted, none have been the "big" one, but I can't help but think that we're going to have one before you know it. The trough that brought us the snow yesterday is already over Maine this morning, and another one is following close on its heels. We're waking up to cloudy skies this morning but we should see some patches of sunshine as the day progresses. Here's some of the forecast discussion from this morning. I don't really expect much out of this, and certainly not what we had Saturday. The work week will start off cool but will warm …

Good morning! Yes, I have a little snow flying around, it's just flurries, but hey... I'll take what I can get. The morning map shows the base of the upper level low rotating through our area, and bringing a little snow along with it. The next 5-7 days will be an active period with slightly above normal temperatures, especially the nighttime temps. The models are still seeing the end of the month cold, so once we get past next week we'll start to see the changes here. All three ensembles are showing it now. Patience. 🙂 Here in Big Canoe this morning, we're all hovering around f…

Good morning! We've halfway through the month and only one chance for snow so far... but I really think that is about to change. The morning map shows a large upper level low over Iowa that is bringing blizzard conditions to that area. Notice the upper level wind speeds over Georgia this morning as those winds round the base of the trough and accelerate. 100-130 knots. That's 115-150 mph. Yet there is peace in the valley. 🙂 To kick things off, there might be a little snow tonight. After looking at all the different maps, I don't think I'd look too far ahead, maybe 120 hours or so and that's it. Way too many changes going on to …

Good morning! Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day, and today will be equally as nice! But be sure to get out and enjoy it while you can, as we are about to enter a VERY active period with chances for precip every 2-3 days. I'm reading a lot of low confidence talk in that forecast. We're at the point to where we're going to see a lot of uncertainty heading toward the end of the month as the atmosphere is starting to respond to the SSW. Think of the earth as a snow globe and someone just gave it a shake, and now we wait to see how it all settles out. Through the end of the month, this is how the individual ensemble members see snow tot…

Good Wednesday morning! Yesterday turned out pretty nice once the fog burned away, and today should be pretty nice as well. We are in a period with very frequent (every 2-3 days) chances for precipitation and clouds and that will continue well into next week. Each wave will bring a small chance for frozen precipitation, mainly across the northern part of the state. There are some big changes lurking just over the horizon, so if you are a winter weather fan, I think your time is coming. 🙂 The morning map (500 mb isobars/winds/water vapor/temps) shows our next trough (over LA) that may bring a shower/sprinkle later tonight. But as you can see, these waves are line…

Good Tuesday morning! I'll keep it quick this morning, I have to run down to Roswell to get a couple of parts installed on the car. Always tweaking. 🙂 Out west, we have a flood of Pacific air which really helps with snow over the northwest mountains, but does us no favors here. A new trough is dipping down into Mexico and it will bring rain to Florida but little to nothing here. Oh look! There is the cold air! Just in time! NOT. Where were you when I need you. Hmmmm... I see a country music song here. 😉 It's cold out there this morning, but not cold enough to see any freezing fog where we live. And it is fogg…

Good morning! I'm up early this morning watching the snow fall. No, not over me, over Alabama and Mississippi. 🙂 Looking at the maps, I just don't see much if any frozen precipitation today. The higher elevations might see some once evaporative cooling drops the temps some, but the lower levels are just too warm .There may be a brief period when the 850 temps lower a few degrees below freezing, but whatever falls will melt on contact, so I'm not seeing any real issues. It may be fun to watch some flakes fly once things moisten up, but the clouds are pretty high and most of what you see on radar is not reaching the ground over Georgia right now. …

Good morning! Yes, I missed doing the weather yesterday, I had to get all the Christmas decorations packed away. Luckily there was nothing going on, and today is going to be just the same except a little warmer. I only hit a high of39 yesterday and to me, any day with a high in the 30's in cold. The trough that was supposed to bring a chance for some white stuff is sitting over western Texas and bring some snow to that area. If you didn't notice, I said "...was supposed...". I just don't think that we're going to see anything from this system. It stalls out for a while and that allows the cold air to slide off to the east and leave it behind. It eventually gets …

Good... morning! 🙂 I had to look! Another 30 minutes and I'll be done putting all the Christmas decorations up. And since this was the first time at this house, we had to re-organize everything so it took a little longer. I'll be back in a little while to make a weather post, but today through Sunday there isn't much to take about. There is a tiny chance that some people will see some flakes flying on Monday, but don't count on it. I just didn't want you to think I forgot or something. 🙂
