Good morning! With all of this great weather, there hasn't been much to talk about, but things will start to change, and it looks like we're going to be entering a period with some very active weather. I hope everyone has enjoyed this great weather that we've had, with nice sunny skies, low humidity, and cool temps, and much of that will continue on through early next week. There is a stalled frontal boundary over the central Gulf that stretches northeast of central Florida, and that boundary will be the focus for the development of a surface low that will eventually make it's way up the east coast of Florida and Georgia, bringing some heavy rain to the coastal …

Good morning! It's time for another post!. The weather has been slow lately, with not much to talk about. Over the last 4-5 days, some people have gotten a lot of rain while others nothing, and it's been a very hit or miss pattern. The current map shows that most of the country is generally on the cool side, with most of the warm temperatures relegated to the southern border and the southeast. I've had people ask me about Hurricane Lee, and my answer has been "no worries for us". As you can see in this image, Lee will be heading north toward Maine. It will start to lose its punch as it gets over colder waters, and will drop to a tropical storm bef…

Good evening! Yep, don't often do this at night, but the wife is off with some other women in the neighborhood yapping, so I can sit on the deck, watch a football game, and look at the weather. 🙂 It appears that we may be looking at a relatively cool month if the CPC and the models are correct. The first two images are the 6-10 day temp and precipitation probabilities. Climate Prediction Center WWW.CPC.NCEP.NOAA.GOV We cool down in a few days, and a large area of below normal temperature probabilities form over parts of the central and eastern US, while at the same time, the precipitation probabilities goes a little above…

Good evening! How are you enjoying this first week of September and the first week of meteorological fall? I had a high of 77 for the first two days, and my lows were mid 60's. Combine that with some breezy winds and it certainly felt like fall across north Georgia. Our temperatures will be gradually warming up as we head through the week, but we'll have another cold front push through the area on Thursday, dropping the temperatures back down again. The ensembles are all showing a trough developing over the eastern part of the US, starting this upcoming weekend, and that trough gets reinforced on Monday or Tuesday next week, before a longer lasting trough takes …

Good afternoon! People are starting to see maps of the tropics, so I wanted to alleviate any issues folks might have here. Right now the models are taking Invest 93L into the panhandle of Florida and curving it out toward the Atlantic, and the majority of the models model ensemble members, and the NHC are following this track. There are a couple of models that bring this system further north before curving, and if that scenario were to occur, it would bring more impacts to north Georgia. but as long the system follows the current tracks, it will most likely bring some much needed rainfall to north Georgia. I will say that WeatherBell believes that this may end up bei…

Good morning! Another day or two of heat, and it will all become a memory! Unfortunately, today and Saturday may end up being the hottest days of the week. It's 6:17 AM right now, and my temperature at 2000 feet is 79 degrees, so it's been a warm night, but not my warmest night of the month, so it will be interesting to see how tonight goes. All of Georgia except the higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains is under a "Heat Advisory" for today and tomorrow, as the heat hangs on just a little bit longer. Watch as our temperatures tumble starting Monday, these are the forecast high temps through Thursday, and notice that the higher eleva…

Good afternoon! Since we have nothing but dry, hot weather, let's talk about something else that is more interesting. The Atlantic has finally come alive, but most of the storms that are out there will have no impact to the lower 48 states. Obviously What was hurricane Hilary is now just rain across the western US. There has helped to reduce their temperatures quite a bit. You can see how tropical rains impact areas that are far away from any major body of water. This is through next Sunday. Meanwhile, high pressure over the central part of the country is bringing some serious heat to a large area of the country. These…

Good afternoon! I can't believe it's already the last half of August, summer is flying by! So far, the temperatures across north Georgia haven't been too bad, but next week that will change as a strong area of high pressure over the central US takes hold and strengthens. The high is showing no signs of moving, so expect the weather to remain the same for the next 7-10 days. In addition to the temperatures running 7-11 degrees above normal, we won't be looking at any rain through next Saturday. August is normally our 2nd warmest month of the year, so hot temperatures are not unusual. This loop shows the 500 mb height anomalies. High pressure strengthens over the …

Good afternoon! I was sitting here eating lunch and thought I'd take a look at the Euro Seasonal Model to get a feel as to how winter might turn out. This is the 500 mb pressure anomaly for the month of December. High to the north and lower pressure to the south. Noy too bad of a look 4 months out. Interesting. Deeper troughing is showing up over the southeast for January. That would imply colder and wetter. Even deeper trough in February. The Seasonal model suggest that our temperatures will average close to normal for the December/January/February timeframe. Surface pressure are pretty l…

Good morning! Another round of storms last night brought more rain to north Georgia, but today should be much calmer with pretty low chances for rain, but with the heat and moisture that is still around, we can't rule out a few more thunderstorms before we start to dry out Tuesday. Speaking of heat, today will be the hottest day of the week and maybe the summer. Here's a map showing the Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warning locations. Only the higher elevations are spared. Here's a look at the high temperatures for today. If any high temp records were in jeopardy you would see a square box around one of those temperatures, but that won't be t…

Good morning! Hot is the key word for the next 3 days. The heat ridge over the western US will be flexing its muscle, and that will bring the heat to the southeast, so let's take a look and see how hot it might get. The morning map shows a wave moving across Illinois and Missouri this morning, and that will eventually make it's way here later today, but the models still have some disagreement on when and if that will happen. Here we see Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Watch for Georgia, while over in southern Alabama an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect. The Special Weather Statement is for fog. The next 6 images are from…

Good morning! We should have a beautiful day in store for today, but that will come to an end later this evening as our next weather maker approaches the state. We have a stationary front over the central part of the state this morning, and later this afternoon that front will begin a push back to the north, bringing moisture back with it. During the overnight hours, the thunderstorm complex that is currently over Missouri and northern Arkansas will move into the northeast corner of the state, and bring a high chance for showers and thunderstorms. The rain associated with this cluster will hand around most of the day tomorrow and possibly into Friday morning be…

Good morning! I have to say that the concern for severe weather has increased for this afternoon and especially for tomorrow, so please pay special attention to the weather later today and tomorrow. The severe threat for today is not as great as tomorrow, so the main focus here will be tomorrow, but I will say that the NAM is bringing the storms in around 8-11 pm tonight instead of tomorrow, so tonight might be an issue. You can see the morning wave, and the larger one that follows. The following wave is the one we'll need to watch, and that should be for later this evening. We do have some showers and thunderstorms moving into the state as I typ…

Good morning! What a great day up here in the mountains! Temperatures are currently in the 70's here in Big Canoe and most of north and east Georgia, but as you move further west, the sun takes over and temperatures are in the 80's. But all good things must come to an end, and it's now time for us to get some rain. Today we start to transition from the nice comfortable humidity's and pleasant temperatures, to the familiar "northwest flow" pattern that brought us all of the rain and severe weather a few weeks ago. Thursday is looking to be a day with a pretty good chance for thunderstorms. There will be several waves of vorticity rotating through the flow around …

Good morning! When you step outside this morning, it's going to feel VERY different than it has for the last several days. Moisture has increase significantly this morning, and will increase further as the day progresses. Combine that moisture with a MCS, and that means that we going to have a very active weather day today, so let's jump right in and take a look at what is going on. Here's the early morning map. We've had a few showers push south out of the mountains this morning, and those are now south of I-85. To our north over western Kentucky is our next weather maker, and that will be pushing southeast through the day toward our area. Once the sun comes u…

It seems like every day that hype and/or misinformation is used to describe the current, and expected, outcome of the Summer of 2023. I heard the word "unprecedented", the usual "blame it on climate change". and the terms "scary" and "frightful". And to think: it is not even Halloween yet! I bring this subject up because I want to restore some degree of reality to the discussion and forecast, because we have a rather tough road ahead of us in terms of severe weather and localization of the heat ridges that involve the U.S. As a first order of business, it appears likely that the subtropical high, which is of the conjoined type as a partner to the Azores and Saharan/P…

Good morning! We still don't have much weather to talk about right now, as a summer heat ridge over the southwest starts to encroach on our area, keeping us hot and relatively dry. Since July is almost over, let's take a look and see how the data looks for the month to date. First, here's a look at my data here at the house. Notice... I came REAL close to hitting 90 degrees when I hit 89.9º on Friday. 🙂 So far, no 90 degree days this year. I'm running about -1.1º below normal so far for July. And here is this July compared to the previous July's here at the house. This first image shows the aver…

Well, I spent the last 5 days going over all the radar images and products (35 images) and wrote up my take on how the storms evolved as they moved across the area, only to lose all my text after my laptop crashed. Normally in the past, this software would have saved the post like a draft, but without all the attachments, but this time, nothing. So needless to say, I am not going back and re-creating everything I wrote. Sorry. I spend more time than I should have and I suppose I should have had it backed up, but based on the way it's worked in the past I didn't do it. Here's a few things I can tell you. The main cell reached an estimated 62,000 feet in h…

Good morning! Today will mark the end of the current weather pattern for a while, as we enter a period where we may see multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms impacting the north Georgia area. The morning map shows a trough to our north over the Great Lakes and a strong summertime heat ridge over the desert southwest. The clockwise flow from the high along with the counter clock-wise flow from the low, will push MCS (Mesoscale Convective Systems) through the flow toward the southeast. The high to the west will expand eastward, and that will be far enough to place us in the flow. I have more information about the smoke that we're expe…

Good morning! The heat is on On the street Inside your head On every beat... Glenn Frey - The Heat is On This will be a hot week for much of the southeast, so get prepared. Fortunately the air will be a little drier than it has been, so it won't feel as hot as the last several days with the dewpoints were in the mid to upper 70's. The orientation of the upper and mid level flow is going to cut off any chance for rain today through tomorrow, so with few clouds and little moisture, our temperatures will rapidly approach 90 degrees. Fortunately with the drier air in place, the heat index is not going to climb to Heat Advisory levels. This anim…

Good afternoon! Well, our stretch of beautiful, dry, and cloud free days are over with, so say hello to the rain chances once again. We started the morning off pretty warm, I had a low of 72.1º which is my 2nd warmest low temp this year, only behind July 8th when I hit 73.5º for a low. However, last night was my warmest night (6 PM - 6 AM) of the year with a 76.7º average temperature. Our dew points are already on the rise and at noon the dew point here is 76 degrees, and that's getting pretty high. Precipitable water values are on the rise as well and well be approaching 2" this afternoon. We may see slightly drier air tomorrow, but that shouldn't impact our c…

Pardon me for preaching a sec—- But, seeing the times we are in, Winter looks to be exciting and for some even worrisome. It seems like moisture is readily available for these systems and we are having flood emergencies all over our Nation. Now I know my post is not scientific, but it is in a way. Nature seems to be in chaos, even angry. I saw where they said yesterday the temp in the gulf near Miami was 98* ! So , we are dealing with extreme conditions. I don’t believe all this is climate change, man made, but I do believe we have contributed with our lack of care and concern. So Winter………….. What is my thinking? 1 . Extremes 2.Because of ch…

Good morning! I'm a real slacker in the summertime when it comes to posting here. I do make post on Facebook but for some reason not here. I'll try to do better. Nothing too out of the ordinary with our weather other than the typical summer afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, and today will continue the trend. The modeled precipitable water values at 11 AM show the north Georgia mountains a little drier than the rest of the state and drier than we have been for the last several days. That should change as later this afternoon as moisture increase once again ahead of two shortwaves that are expected to make their way into the nort…
