Good morning! When you step outside this morning, it's going to feel VERY different than it has for the last several days. Moisture has increase significantly this morning, and will increase further as the day progresses. Combine that moisture with a MCS, and that means that we going to have a very active weather day today, so let's jump right in and take a look at what is going on. Here's the early morning map. We've had a few showers push south out of the mountains this morning, and those are now south of I-85. To our north over western Kentucky is our next weather maker, and that will be pushing southeast through the day toward our area. Once the sun comes u…

It seems like every day that hype and/or misinformation is used to describe the current, and expected, outcome of the Summer of 2023. I heard the word "unprecedented", the usual "blame it on climate change". and the terms "scary" and "frightful". And to think: it is not even Halloween yet! I bring this subject up because I want to restore some degree of reality to the discussion and forecast, because we have a rather tough road ahead of us in terms of severe weather and localization of the heat ridges that involve the U.S. As a first order of business, it appears likely that the subtropical high, which is of the conjoined type as a partner to the Azores and Saharan/P…

Good morning! We still don't have much weather to talk about right now, as a summer heat ridge over the southwest starts to encroach on our area, keeping us hot and relatively dry. Since July is almost over, let's take a look and see how the data looks for the month to date. First, here's a look at my data here at the house. Notice... I came REAL close to hitting 90 degrees when I hit 89.9º on Friday. 🙂 So far, no 90 degree days this year. I'm running about -1.1º below normal so far for July. And here is this July compared to the previous July's here at the house. This first image shows the aver…

Well, I spent the last 5 days going over all the radar images and products (35 images) and wrote up my take on how the storms evolved as they moved across the area, only to lose all my text after my laptop crashed. Normally in the past, this software would have saved the post like a draft, but without all the attachments, but this time, nothing. So needless to say, I am not going back and re-creating everything I wrote. Sorry. I spend more time than I should have and I suppose I should have had it backed up, but based on the way it's worked in the past I didn't do it. Here's a few things I can tell you. The main cell reached an estimated 62,000 feet in h…

Good morning! Today will mark the end of the current weather pattern for a while, as we enter a period where we may see multiple waves of showers and thunderstorms impacting the north Georgia area. The morning map shows a trough to our north over the Great Lakes and a strong summertime heat ridge over the desert southwest. The clockwise flow from the high along with the counter clock-wise flow from the low, will push MCS (Mesoscale Convective Systems) through the flow toward the southeast. The high to the west will expand eastward, and that will be far enough to place us in the flow. I have more information about the smoke that we're expe…

Good morning! The heat is on On the street Inside your head On every beat... Glenn Frey - The Heat is On This will be a hot week for much of the southeast, so get prepared. Fortunately the air will be a little drier than it has been, so it won't feel as hot as the last several days with the dewpoints were in the mid to upper 70's. The orientation of the upper and mid level flow is going to cut off any chance for rain today through tomorrow, so with few clouds and little moisture, our temperatures will rapidly approach 90 degrees. Fortunately with the drier air in place, the heat index is not going to climb to Heat Advisory levels. This anim…

Good afternoon! Well, our stretch of beautiful, dry, and cloud free days are over with, so say hello to the rain chances once again. We started the morning off pretty warm, I had a low of 72.1º which is my 2nd warmest low temp this year, only behind July 8th when I hit 73.5º for a low. However, last night was my warmest night (6 PM - 6 AM) of the year with a 76.7º average temperature. Our dew points are already on the rise and at noon the dew point here is 76 degrees, and that's getting pretty high. Precipitable water values are on the rise as well and well be approaching 2" this afternoon. We may see slightly drier air tomorrow, but that shouldn't impact our c…

Pardon me for preaching a sec—- But, seeing the times we are in, Winter looks to be exciting and for some even worrisome. It seems like moisture is readily available for these systems and we are having flood emergencies all over our Nation. Now I know my post is not scientific, but it is in a way. Nature seems to be in chaos, even angry. I saw where they said yesterday the temp in the gulf near Miami was 98* ! So , we are dealing with extreme conditions. I don’t believe all this is climate change, man made, but I do believe we have contributed with our lack of care and concern. So Winter………….. What is my thinking? 1 . Extremes 2.Because of ch…

Good morning! I'm a real slacker in the summertime when it comes to posting here. I do make post on Facebook but for some reason not here. I'll try to do better. Nothing too out of the ordinary with our weather other than the typical summer afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, and today will continue the trend. The modeled precipitable water values at 11 AM show the north Georgia mountains a little drier than the rest of the state and drier than we have been for the last several days. That should change as later this afternoon as moisture increase once again ahead of two shortwaves that are expected to make their way into the nort…

I was suspended. I have no idea why. They want you to appeal the suspension but how do you appeal something unknown? So I got an email today saying that they were not going to remove the suspension. I thought Twitter would be better with Elon but I guess it's not.

Good morning! You may be hearing about the potential for severe weather across the southeast today, so I just wanted to help alleviate any fears concerning the weather for our area. We'll first start with the Storm Prediction Center's Day 1 Severe Weather Outlook, and I've copied the bits and pieces that are perinate to us. South Georgia is the bulls eye today. The greatest threat comes from severe wind gusts. This shows the probability of damaging thunderstorm winds or wind gusts of 50 knots or higher within 25 miles of a point. The hatched area indicates a 10% or greater probability of wind gusts 65 knots or greater within 25 …

Good morning! I've been a slacker lately and only posting to Facebook, and that's not the way I'm suppose to do this. 🙂 What was suppose to be a pretty wet week now looks like it may not be quite as wet as initially thought across north Georgia. The frontal boundary that stalled to our south was anticipated to move back north, but now it appears it may stay south of the north Georgia area and keep the heavier rain away from us. The keyword here is "may". There are currently some showers to our west that are moving this way, and those "may" impact our area later today. I do think that most of the day should be pretty nice as well as tomorrow, but the waves…

Good morning! There really isn't any weather to talk about, and that's the main reason I haven't been posting. I guess if you like cool weather at the end of May, then you ought to be perfectly happy with what we have. I however, would prefer warmer (more seasonable) temperatures and less wind. You can trust me when I say I don't want it hot, I hate temps in the 90's and would prefer highs in the low to mid 80's. We are stuck in a pattern called a Rex Block. The Rex block is nothing more than high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south. Because both pressure areas are roughly the same strength, the pattern is "stuck" until an imbalance is created a…

Everything may get a little wonky for a few days as I install a different theme, add some enhancements, and get everything working again. It should all be working right now, but there are some items that still need tending to, as well as changing images and re-organizing.

Good morning! One more warm day is in store for the southeast before we start a pattern change. We can forget about the warmer weather for a while, as a cooler pattern will take hold and hang around into early May. The reason for the cooler air is because of a negative North Atlantic Oscillation or NAO. These patterns are normally more noticeable during the winter months, and highly desired if you like winter weather. A negative NAO is a blocking pattern that helps to keep the colder air locked up over the eastern US. The block is an area of higher pressure near Greenland, and that high prevents systems that come across the US from racing out to sea. Instead, t…

Good morning! It's been a while since I've made a post, so I figured now was a good time! 🙂 Not much going on with the weather at the moment except for the normal spring events that we see year after year. We warm up and get rain, cool down and dry out, then we rinse and repeat. So far our events have been weak across north Georgia, with very little in the way of severe weather this season. I suspect that part of the reason is that we've had such a mild winter (except for the one period in December) so we're not seeing big clashes of cold and warm air. We've been relatively mild with 11 days in March with high temps 70 degrees and above here at the house, but I …

Good morning! It's not like I've been making a lot of post lately anyway, but this will be the last one for about 11 days. We're leaving at 3AM tomorrow morning to drive to Ft. Lauderdale where we'll spend the night before leaving Sunday on a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean. 🙂 Maybe this will help make up for the lack of snow this winter, call it my consolation prize. LOL! We'll make stops at Princess Cays, St. Thomas, and St. Kitts before returning back on the following Sunday. As soon as we get back at 6 AM and disembark, we hop back in the car and drive to Key West for a couple of nights to recuperate 🙃 before heading back home. I may not do any weather post (unless…

Good morning! Things have taken a slight turn for the worse today as parts of North Georgia are now in an "Enhanced Risk" area (3/5) for today. There inhibiting factors are not as inhibiting this morning, so the likelihood of seeing some severe weather has increased. Part of North Georgia is now under a "High Wind Warning" with wind gust 50+ mph. The tornado chance is still at 2% for most of the area except the far NW corner where the chance is up to 5%. Here is the current situation. A Tornado Watch is currently in effect for Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Arkansas this morning as the upper level low over Texas begins to strengthen and move …

Good morning! And it is early, I'm starting this post at 2:55 AM and it doesn't look like we'll see any severe weather from this round of storms. The SPC said this in the most recent MCD: "However, based on forecast soundings, this is not expected to become sufficient to support more than very weak destabilization beneath relatively warm mid/upper levels with weak lapse rates. While it is possible that a few strong gusts may accompany convection spreading into the Carolina Piedmont during the next few hours, the risk for severe storms appears likely to remain generally low." EDIT: at 3:06 AM the NWS said they were going to cancel the Tornado Watch shortly. Watc…

Good morning! We can officially say good riddance to the Winter of 2022-2023. That really wasn't much fun. While we did have some record breaking cold and snow around Christmas, that was pretty much the extent of the winter weather across north Georgia. We now turn our eyes to rain, thunderstorms, and the potential for severe weather. The action starts tonight and continues through Friday night. I'm not sold on any severe weather here because I believe that the bulk of the action will be further to our north, and by Friday we're on the weakening end of a front, so those storms start to fall apart as they reach Georgia. The Storm Prediction Center has all …

Good morning! Only a few more days and Meteorological Winter will be over, and it hasn't been very much like winter. Today isn't going to be a bad day as, as we'll see the sun pop through the clouds a little more than yesterday, and that means our rain chances disappear for about 24 hours. We have a few very light showers lingering across north Georgia this morning but those should be dissipating as the morning progresses. With the brighter skies and some breaks in the clouds, our highs should climb to the 60-70's today, making for a very pleasant day. All of that begins to change tomorrow as a cold front begins its approach to the area. A surface low pres…

Good morning! The big weather story this week is going to be the record breaking temperatures across the southeast, as an extremely stout high pressure takes control of our weather. This is not your ordinary February high pressure. Pressure anomalies of 2+ standard deviations above normal are expected between Tuesday and Friday, leading to temperatures that will run 15-25 degrees above normal. I've been here in Big Canoe since May 2020 which means I have two full winter temp records under my belt, (this is the third) and my highest winter temp I have recorded was 72.8º in the winter of December 2020 through February 2021. That record should easily be broken ove…

Good morning! We've had what I would call a major change in the forecast for the weekend. During the early part of the week we've been watching the models track an upper level low across the country, and they ae now narrowing down the track and strength of that low. The models are showing agreement in the possibility of snow across the north Georgia area late Saturday night and into Sunday morning. Late winter upper level lows can be quite dynamic in nature, leading to winter conditions when there otherwise might not be any, and that may be the case with this system. I believe that the best chances of seeing some heavy snow will be in the mountains of North Car…
