Good morning! Since we don't really have any weather to talk about here, I figured it would be a good time to introduce you to our new tropical storm out in the Atlantic, please meet Fiona. First we'll take a look at the NHC track and discussion, and then we'll see what a few other meteorologist have to say, along with some model images to illustrate what the current thinking is. The thinking is that Fiona will eventually recurve out into the Atlantic, but there is some uncertainty to that, so she remains something that we need to watch. National Hurricane Center Meteorologist thoughts... Co…

Good afternoon! There is absolutely nothing going on in the tropics, and the 10th was the climatological peak of the hurricane season, and so far every hurricane forecast has been wrong and/or revised. Normally a La Nina ENSO state means increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic, but not this year. The La Nina is not coupled with the atmosphere, and therefore not giving the same response that a La Nina would normally provide. Have you been outside yet? I love fall, and today and tomorrow are going to bring a good taste of it. Parts of north Georgia have dropped into the low 50's and even upper 40's behind the front, and those dewpoints have followed suit. …

Good morning! Here we are one day away from the peak of the hurricane season and we've only had one hurricane. Just goes to show how well long range forecast work out. Hurricane Earl is moving northeast well out in the Atlantic, so no worries for us. Today starts the change from dry to wet. I know some people had some rain yesterday, especially across the mountains where they were triggered by the wedge boundary, but our flow will be shifting to a more southerly fetch on Saturday as the high pressure to our north moves toward the Atlantic and these strong easterly to northeasterly winds that are part of the wedge will start to diminish. So far this morning I've …

Good morning! Good morning! We're in the soup and the soup isn't going anywhere. Today should be a close repeat to yesterday, but tomorrow will bring slightly lower chances for rain. We'll call it a break, and our break will last through Wednesday, but after that more heavy rain returns right on through the weekend. The WPC is calling for another 4-5 inches of rain through next weekend, and if you happen to get under one of these efficient rain producers, you can have even more. There is much else to say since nothing is changing right now. Our temperatures will remain comfortable but the dew points will not. Pretty soon we'll be classified as a "Rain For…

Good morning! Wow, it's hard to believe how quickly this year has gone! The start of meteorological fall was the 1st, we're 7 days from the peak of the hurricane season, and now 19 days from astronomical fall. Did you get some rain last night? Parts of north Georgia saw op to 2.5" overnight, and I had 1.20" here at the house. Today through Monday will bring high chances for widespread showers and thunderstorms. The use of the word "thunderstorms" might be stretching it a bit, as most of the rain that falls will be tropical in nature. We won't have much heating to generate larger thunderstorms and the upper atmosphere is warm, so most of what we'll see will just…

Good morning! Prepare for a couple of very nice days with much drier air pushing in to replace the humid conditions that we've been putting up with for the last several weeks, but don't get use to it, because by Friday it will just be a memory. Beginning Saturday the rain returns and we can expect the unsettled conditions to stay around through most of next week. Of course that will bring the return of daily showers and thunderstorms to our area. The tropics are active, but there is nothing that will impact the US in the near future, so no worries here. For the first time since 1941, the Atlantic has had no named storm (e.g., tropical storm or hurricane) …

Good morning! I've been a slacker with the weather as of late. There is only so much you can say about partly cloudy skies and afternoon showers and you finally run out of words. We will have a weak cold front push through later today that will bring a chance for some showers and thunderstorms, and behind the front comes a nice push of much drier air. Our temperatures won't change a lot but it will feel much more pleasant, especially in the evenings and early morning hours. That dry air will hang around through Friday morning before increasing once again, and our weather will remain unsettled from Friday through the middle of next week. Thursday looks to be the…

Good morning! We had a beautiful day yesterday, and today and tomorrow should be pretty much the same. But our weather is not what I'm focused on this morning. We're watching two tropical waves that are currently making their way across the Atlantic, and one of those is showing signs for the potential for a hurricane. This system is way out in the eastern Atlantic but it has already caught the attention of the computer models and meteorologist, so that will be the focus of the post today. Our rain chances for the next 7 days have down compared to what we were seeing yesterday, so that's a good thing. I really enjoyed the weather yesterday afternoon, but there we…

Good morning! We're starting off the morning with some light showers and drizzle, but that will give way later to some sunshine, but we can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm as the day heats up. The next 7 days will bring a 50/50 chance for rain each day, so the forecast doesn't change. So instead of our weather, we're going to focus on the tropics. After the slowest start to the hurricane season since 1988, there are signs that the tropics are finally waking up. There are two systems that the NHC is tracking, and there may be more before we reach the end of next week. Here are the two systems the NHC is tracking. …

Good morning! I really wish I could come up with some exciting weather to talk about, but that just isn't in the cards right now. We have some activity in the tropics, but nothing close to home at the moment The greatest chance for rain is going to remain to our south for today and tomorrow, but it doesn't rule out a random shower or two. There is a ton of uncertainty in both the short and long term forecast at the moment, and of course it's all dependent on how much of a push north we get from the stalled boundary and how far the tropical feature to our west moves east, right now the bulk of the moisture stays to the south. The NWS said this about the sho…

Good morning! I believe that our rain chances will be a little lower for a few days. We still have chances for showers in the forecast for the next 7 days, the bulk of the heavier rain is going to remain co-located with the higher precipitable water values to our south. The boundary that has been dividing the moist from the dry remains almost stationary, and with occasional drifts north and south. With no steering currents to move things around, we are sometimes on the moist side of the boundary (like two days ago), while other times (like today and tomorrow) we're on the drier side. North Georgia will stay on the drier side of the boundary through at least We…

Good morning! Well, I tried to get a post up yesterday, but our guest stayed until 2 PM, so obviously that didn't happen. 🙂 How much rain did you get yesterday and last night? I ended up with 1.94", so that was a pretty heft rainfall. And guess what? We get to see more of that today! In the post I was going to make yesterday, I mentioned that the models were showing the boundary that is causing the rain staying further south than previous runs, and if that happened we would stay in the drier air. Good thing I didn't post that. Now it's flipped the other way and the rain has returned from Wednesday on. Actually, it never really goes away, so don't get your hopes …

Good morning! We only had a few scattered showers yesterday, so I hope you enjoyed the "grace" days, maybe now we can get to the promised rain. But not so quick... there is one caveat to the rain and that's the question of where the axis of the heaviest precipitation might take place. In the post I show you what the models are thinking to give you an idea of the uncertainty in the forecast. The forecast area can still expect 1.5-3.0" of rain with isolated amounts up to 4.0" through next Friday, although right now I expect the heaviest rain to stay to our south. There are some hydrological concerns as we get into next week, and that Hydrology Statement is furthe…

Good morning! Well, it didn't rain yesterday, and it may not rain today. The rain is focused on central and southern Georgia today, so our chances will be slight at best. We'll probably stay mostly cloudy, but there could be some breaks with sunshine. We're right on the edge of the clouds, so that makes it tricky to predict. The frontal boundary responsible for the cooler air is also responsible for the lack of rain yesterday and again today. It sagged further south than anticipated, and instead of rain we have fall weather. We're still going to get the rain, and it's going to be more of a nuisance than anything else. We're still expecting several inches throug…

Good morning! Might as well get use to the clouds because they are going to be around for awhile. And as long as you're getting use to things, add rain to the list. 🙂 Even if you're not seeing any rain right now, it probably feels like it could rain at any moment. With temperatures in the 60's, a steady northeast wind, and all of this moisture, it feels pretty cool and fall like out there this morning. Wouldn't it be great to have an early start to fall? It seems like we always stay warm right up to November, so a cooler September and October would be nice. A little frost on the pumpkin... 🙂 We are still expecting several inches of rain through the weekend,…

Good morning! Well, the last of the nice cool and dry days are over, and we will start off the beginning of the work week with a chance of showers and thunderstorms later today. Fortunately, most if not all of the day should be nice, so if we see any rain (and the chances are low), it will be after all of the daytime activities are over. Tomorrow should be dry, but parts of north Georgia might have a slight chance for a shower. Wednesday brings the change in the pattern from dry to wet, and wet it is going to be. At the moment, the WPC is calling for 3-4" of rain between Wednesday and Monday morning, so localized flooding and flash flooding will be a conc…

Good morning! We had a break from the rain yesterday, even though it was all around us, so I wasn't a very good dart thrower. 🙂 My high temps have been fairly low the last two days with highs in the low 80's. We still have a >70% chance for rain through Thursday, at least across the higher elevations, and those chances decrease slightly as you head south. Some of the models are showing a rapid development of the showers and thunderstorms around the 1 PM timeframe, so heads up if you happen to be enjoying the outdoors today. The good news is that a cold front is expected to push through our area late Thursday and into Friday, and it will bring much drier…

Good morning! Well, how do like this weather so far? 🙂 It's nice and crisp, with breezy northeast winds this morning, and it feels an awful lot like fall out there. Even though it's not fall, it is certainly going to feel like it for the next week. We will warm to the low 80's from Sunday through Tuesday, but after that we cool back down with highs in the mid 70's and increased chances for rain. It now appears that the rest of the month may end up being below normal for temperatures, so that is some very good news for a month that is usually pretty hot here in Georgia. Fall is generally a dry and calm season for north Georgia, with an occasional tropical …

Good morning! Well... the end is in sight. Sorry... I meant the end of the rain. 🙂 Today should be the last "good" shot of it as a cold front makes its way into the state and pushes the rain away tomorrow. There is a chance the the rain along the Gulf coast may work to inhibit the rain chances here today, so we'll see how that plays out. There will be some slight chances for rain on Friday depending on how quickly the front clears our area, but Saturday and Sunday should be pretty nice. You're going to love the lower dewpoints and temperatures, and those will carry over into next week. Shower chances return Monday as the north Georgia area will be in a no…

Good morning! It looks like we caught a break in the action yesterday, i.e. we got lucky and missed the rain for the most part. I don't think today will turn out the same way. Keep in mind, predicting the location summer thunderstorms is like throwing darts, but we have very high chances for rain today. I guess if you throw enough darts, you finally hit the center. 🙂 The entire week, except for Friday, will have 70-90% chances for rain with the majority of that falling during the afternoon and evenings. Friday finally brings a cold front across the area and we'll cool down and dry out for a few days. Our 10 day average temperature anomaly shows us running below …

Good morning! I could sit here and not type anything, and I'd bet you would still know what was going to happen with the weather today. Today through next Thursday will bring a 70% chance of rain to most of the north Georgia area, especially for folks that live in the higher elevations. I had 0.64" of rain yesterday and our totals keep going up. I would much rather go into the climatologically dry fall season with a surplus than a deficit. Late this weekend, a wave is forecast to move off of the African coast and over the Atlantic, and the NHC is denoting an area of possible development next week. Maybe we'll have something to watch over the next 7-10 days. Mor…

Good morning! There is still a 50/50 or greater chance for showers each day for the next week, so no changes to report for us. We really can't complain though, we're doing well with rain, so things aren't drying out and creating a fire hazard, and our temperatures have been running right at the normal mark, so no excessive heat to contend with. So I'm not complaining, I just wish I had something else to talk about. 🙂 The tropics are still unusually quiet right now with absolutely nothing going on, and part of the reason for that has been a layer of dusty dry air called the Saharan Air Layer or SAL. Dust is carried off of the deserts of Africa, and once it gets …

Good morning! More boring summertime weather where the weather never changes. 🙂 Oh wait... one little change for today! The rain chances drop to the 40% range instead of the 70-80% chances we've been experiencing. That's it. Starting tomorrow, we jump back up to 50% chances for the next 7 days with highs in the mid 80's and lows in the mid 60's, so really no change for the foreseeable future. Nothing else to talk about right now, so I'll keep it short! All three of the deterministic models show temperature anomalies at or below normal over the next 10 days. For precipitation, the GFS is wetter than the Euro and…

Good morning! Well... another July under our belt and almost half of the summer is gone. 2/3 of meteorological summer is behind us. So far we've been pretty close to normal for our temperatures and rainfall since June 1. Today is going to be another wet day, and showers are already falling across the top row of counties and more are entering the state, and today will bring the highest rain chances for the week. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the warmest days and the days with the lowest chance for rain. Beginning Wednesday our rain chances return to the "coin flip" range right on through next weekend and hour highs settle into the mid 80's. No big changes…

Good morning! We took the grandbaby and her parents to the pool yesterday and the weather turned out perfect! We had a few light sprinkles while we were there and the clouds helped to keep the temperatures at reasonable levels. Did you like the weather yesterday? If you did, today and tomorrow are going to be very much the same, with high probabilities of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Some of those from yesterday lingered well into the early morning hours, as the air is saturated and it doesn't take much to make it rain. There is not going to be any real change in the forecast for the at least the next 7 days. Fortunately, we're stuck in…
