Good morning! We start the last full week of October with a nice mild fall day with some high clouds passing by, but the weather begins to change tomorrow in advance of a fall cold front. Right now there is a conditional threat for some severe weather late Tuesday and into Tuesday night, so you need to stay aware. Currently the main threats are high wind gusts and the possibility of some small hail, but an isolated quick spin up tornado can't be ruled out, so please have a way of receiving weather alerts beginning later tomorrow and certainly into the overnight hours tomorrow night. The shear values are quite high but we'll be missing one very important ingredi…

Good morning! The big story for the day is the chance for our first freeze of the season beginning tomorrow morning. It now looks as though we might see three mornings of freezing weather, so now is the time to bring in those sensitive plants if you have any, and don't forget the pets. The Freeze Watch has been changed to a Freeze Warning and expanded further south, while a Freeze Watch has been issued for points south of the warning. We're looking at about three mornings at or below freezing, so this will be an early cold weather outbreak and an early freeze for north Georgia. As I mentioned several post ago, the last several years have seen a very late f…

Good morning! Enjoy the weather today and part of the day tomorrow, and then you need to break out the warm clothes. The well advertised cold front is slowly making it's way southeast. Today will be very warm much like yesterday, and tomorrow will be very mild through most of the day. Sometime around the early afternoon hours tomorrow the front will begin to push into the state, and that's when our temperatures and dew points start to fall. By Tuesday morning most everyone across north Georgia will be in the 30's and some areas across the higher elevations will dip below freezing. The high temperatures will probably not get out of the 40 degree range on Tu…

Good morning! Just a short post today since there isn't anything going on with the weather at the moment. Today will be a beautiful fall football day, so I hope everyone can spend some time outdoors in this beautiful weather. Depending on where you live, the morning is starting off cold or warm. Here in Big Canoe, the warmer sites are those higher up in elevation while down below temperatures are in the upper 30's to low 40's. Because of the very dry air, those temperatures will rocket all the way up to almost 80 degrees today, and not far from that tomorrow. Monday begins the change in the pattern, and by Tuesday morning north Georgia will be looking at l…

Good Thursday morning! Did everyone enjoy the rain? It wasn't a lot but it was a lot more than we've had for the last four weeks, so we'll just have to be happy for what we got. I measured 0.31" of rain while most of north Georgia saw less than 0.50". You need to go further south toward the Atlanta area before seeing higher totals. Today will be a pretty nice day. We'll dry out but remain fairly mild with highs near 70. The Friday temperatures will be slightly below normal, but Saturday and Sunday will be slightly warmer and closer to normal. Expect a pattern change beginning on Monday as a strong fall cold front approaches the area. Temperatures for Tues…

Good morning! We're about halfway through the month and we're running well below normal for our mean temperature so far. This is the third month in a row that our temperatures have remained below normal, and I'm liking this a lot! 🙂 Today and tomorrow are going to be generally cloudy days where we'll have on and off rain showers. There will be a chance for some thunderstorms as well, so don't be surprised to hear a few rumbles of thunder later today and tomorrow. The cold front will push through on Thursday with some cooler and drier air and dry us out for half of the weekend. Moisture does return on Sunday in advance of an even stronger cold front on Monday/Tu…

Good morning! With all of this sunny dry weather, there hasn't been much for me to talk about. I've had a nice break with the Petit Le Mans, multiple weekends with guest here at the house, and just life in general. I need a break every now and then or it starts to become more like a job than something I enjoy doing. People have often asked me why I don't try to make some money off of doing the weather, and that is very easy for me to answer, I don't want that commitment. I do this because I like doing it and it wouldn't be nearly as much fun for me if I had to do it. So that is the reason for the occasional breaks, they help to make it fun to do the weather instead o…

Good morning! How are you liking this nice weather so far? Is it feeling more like fall now? One negative to the nice weather is the lack of rainfall. Even though the last 14 days has been very dry across most of Georgia, we are not in a drought situation at the moment. However, there is zero rain in the forecast for the next 7 days so the soil and plants will continue to dry and start to create elevated fire weather conditions. I have more details regarding the dry conditions in the post. Our temperatures will continue to remain below normal despite a tiny warm up on Wednesday through Friday when we might hit the low to mid 70s for highs. A dry cold fro…

Good morning! We now have Hurricane Ian in the Caribbean this morning, and he's making his way northwest toward the Gulf of Mexico with 75 mph winds. Rapid intensification is expected to continue throughout the day and this evening and Ian is expected to be a major hurricane by the time it reaches the tip of Cuba later tonight. There are signs that Ian will stall just off the coast from Tampa, and if this happens, some very serious flooding and storm surge conditions will be coving the area. There is still a considerable amount of disagreement as to exactly what Ian will do once it gets into the Gulf. Later in the period shear and dry air entrainment will help …

Good morning! More changes overnight regarding the anticipated track and strength of Ian, but before we jump into that, there will be a chance for some showers and possibly a thunderstorm today. Rain is ongoing across portions of north Georgia at 5:23 AM, and that will continue to push south and east through the morning. Rainfall amounts should be relatively light, so hopefully there won't be too many plans messed up. The more important weather topic is Tropical Storm Ian and where he's going to go. It's now looking like Ian will make landfall somewhere along the Florida panhandle during the early morning hours next Friday. The only catch is that there is still …

Good morning! We now have Tropical storm Ian, and Ian is currently projected to make landfall somewhere around the Tampa area sometime around Wednesday. Ian is expected to be a CAT 3 hurricane at landfall according to the NHC. Keep in mind, track errors at 120 hours are 150 miles and 100 miles at 96 hours. AND... that doesn't mean that the track won't change. There is still a lot of uncertainty about what Ian will do after is passes by/over Cuba. Everyone along the west coast of the peninsula need to be prepared for a hurricane. It is still uncertain where Ian will go after landfall, but many of the models are bringing him back over Georgia, and some of the mod…

Good morning! Only 7 days until the first of October, and those 7 days should feel very much like fall. The next 7 days should see highs in the mid 70's, and through Sunday the lows should be in the 50's, but starting Monday those will drop into the 40's for much of north Georgia and stay that way at least through Wednesday/Thursday. There will be a slight chance for a shower Sunday as a reinforcing shot of cooler and drier weather pushes in to the state, and that front will drop those night time temperatures into the 40's for 3-4 days. The main focus is on Tropical Depression Nine. A note, these images are only to be used as guidance and are not official foreca…

Good morning! We will focus on Invest 98L once again this morning, and the signs are not good for the southeast. Just an FYI, the system coming off of the African coast may become Hermine first, which would mean that our Caribbean system will become Ian. The models have shifted west with the tracks, placing more of the southeast in the cone of uncertainty. Personally, If I lived in Florida or had some interest there, I would go ahead and make some preliminary plans for a hurricane. Tomorrow morning is going to feel 15-20 degrees cooler than this morning and the high temperatures are going to be close to what our lows have been for the last 3-4 days. Once w…

Good morning! No, it isn't the start of fall just yet, that happens at 9:04 PM tomorrow. Everyone just naturally assumes the 21st is the day but it varies from year to year, hence the reason for September 1 being the start of meteorological fall. It doesn't really matter, it's going to be very warm today and most people are still thinking summer weather. After Thursday we cool back down to highs in the mid 70's. Everyone can relax, the heatwave is almost over. 🙂 On a more serious note, the tropical wave that is approaching the Windward Islands may become a serious threat to the US mainland over the next 7 days. Right now it's still called Invest 98L but the NHC…

Good morning! Since Fiona decided to make a hard right, there hasn't been much weather to talk about. Fiona is now a major CAT 3 hurricane and is passing close to the Turks and Caicos while brushing most of the Bahamas. She will have an impact on Bermuda in the coming days, but will fortunately miss the US. There is one benefit that Fiona will pull in some cooler weather for a couple of days starting on Friday. I only hit a high of 80.3 yesterday, and I expect today through Thursday to be pretty much the same (EDIT: hit a high of 84.6 around 1 PM). My wife said someone told her that they can't believe it's so hot for September and I had to laugh. We can have so…

Good morning! Since we don't really have any weather to talk about here, I figured it would be a good time to introduce you to our new tropical storm out in the Atlantic, please meet Fiona. First we'll take a look at the NHC track and discussion, and then we'll see what a few other meteorologist have to say, along with some model images to illustrate what the current thinking is. The thinking is that Fiona will eventually recurve out into the Atlantic, but there is some uncertainty to that, so she remains something that we need to watch. National Hurricane Center Meteorologist thoughts... Co…

Good afternoon! There is absolutely nothing going on in the tropics, and the 10th was the climatological peak of the hurricane season, and so far every hurricane forecast has been wrong and/or revised. Normally a La Nina ENSO state means increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic, but not this year. The La Nina is not coupled with the atmosphere, and therefore not giving the same response that a La Nina would normally provide. Have you been outside yet? I love fall, and today and tomorrow are going to bring a good taste of it. Parts of north Georgia have dropped into the low 50's and even upper 40's behind the front, and those dewpoints have followed suit. …

Good morning! Here we are one day away from the peak of the hurricane season and we've only had one hurricane. Just goes to show how well long range forecast work out. Hurricane Earl is moving northeast well out in the Atlantic, so no worries for us. Today starts the change from dry to wet. I know some people had some rain yesterday, especially across the mountains where they were triggered by the wedge boundary, but our flow will be shifting to a more southerly fetch on Saturday as the high pressure to our north moves toward the Atlantic and these strong easterly to northeasterly winds that are part of the wedge will start to diminish. So far this morning I've …

Good morning! Good morning! We're in the soup and the soup isn't going anywhere. Today should be a close repeat to yesterday, but tomorrow will bring slightly lower chances for rain. We'll call it a break, and our break will last through Wednesday, but after that more heavy rain returns right on through the weekend. The WPC is calling for another 4-5 inches of rain through next weekend, and if you happen to get under one of these efficient rain producers, you can have even more. There is much else to say since nothing is changing right now. Our temperatures will remain comfortable but the dew points will not. Pretty soon we'll be classified as a "Rain For…

Good morning! Wow, it's hard to believe how quickly this year has gone! The start of meteorological fall was the 1st, we're 7 days from the peak of the hurricane season, and now 19 days from astronomical fall. Did you get some rain last night? Parts of north Georgia saw op to 2.5" overnight, and I had 1.20" here at the house. Today through Monday will bring high chances for widespread showers and thunderstorms. The use of the word "thunderstorms" might be stretching it a bit, as most of the rain that falls will be tropical in nature. We won't have much heating to generate larger thunderstorms and the upper atmosphere is warm, so most of what we'll see will just…

Good morning! Prepare for a couple of very nice days with much drier air pushing in to replace the humid conditions that we've been putting up with for the last several weeks, but don't get use to it, because by Friday it will just be a memory. Beginning Saturday the rain returns and we can expect the unsettled conditions to stay around through most of next week. Of course that will bring the return of daily showers and thunderstorms to our area. The tropics are active, but there is nothing that will impact the US in the near future, so no worries here. For the first time since 1941, the Atlantic has had no named storm (e.g., tropical storm or hurricane) …

Good morning! I've been a slacker with the weather as of late. There is only so much you can say about partly cloudy skies and afternoon showers and you finally run out of words. We will have a weak cold front push through later today that will bring a chance for some showers and thunderstorms, and behind the front comes a nice push of much drier air. Our temperatures won't change a lot but it will feel much more pleasant, especially in the evenings and early morning hours. That dry air will hang around through Friday morning before increasing once again, and our weather will remain unsettled from Friday through the middle of next week. Thursday looks to be the…

Good morning! We had a beautiful day yesterday, and today and tomorrow should be pretty much the same. But our weather is not what I'm focused on this morning. We're watching two tropical waves that are currently making their way across the Atlantic, and one of those is showing signs for the potential for a hurricane. This system is way out in the eastern Atlantic but it has already caught the attention of the computer models and meteorologist, so that will be the focus of the post today. Our rain chances for the next 7 days have down compared to what we were seeing yesterday, so that's a good thing. I really enjoyed the weather yesterday afternoon, but there we…

Good morning! We're starting off the morning with some light showers and drizzle, but that will give way later to some sunshine, but we can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm as the day heats up. The next 7 days will bring a 50/50 chance for rain each day, so the forecast doesn't change. So instead of our weather, we're going to focus on the tropics. After the slowest start to the hurricane season since 1988, there are signs that the tropics are finally waking up. There are two systems that the NHC is tracking, and there may be more before we reach the end of next week. Here are the two systems the NHC is tracking. …

Good morning! I really wish I could come up with some exciting weather to talk about, but that just isn't in the cards right now. We have some activity in the tropics, but nothing close to home at the moment The greatest chance for rain is going to remain to our south for today and tomorrow, but it doesn't rule out a random shower or two. There is a ton of uncertainty in both the short and long term forecast at the moment, and of course it's all dependent on how much of a push north we get from the stalled boundary and how far the tropical feature to our west moves east, right now the bulk of the moisture stays to the south. The NWS said this about the sho…
