Good morning! We had a very nice reprieve from the heat yesterday, and I only hit 76 degrees for a high temperature. Today will be very much the same across north Georgia, but areas to our south will start to see an increase in showers and thunderstorms as our flow will be coming from the south starting later this evening. That southerly flow is going to recharge our atmosphere with moisture, so take advantage of the weather today. If I just say "more of the same", you'll probably understand exactly what I'm talking about. Beginning Wednesday the rain chances ramp up and don't change much through the beginning of next week. We're still watching the low pressure…

Good morning! How much rain did everyone get? My CoCoRaHS gauge measured 2.57" over the last two days, so that will help in putting a dent in the dry conditions that had been building from the previous weeks. And if that isn't enough for you, then I have good news! This is going to be a fairly wet work week, so plan ahead. We'll dry out overnight and into tomorrow, but the moisture returns Monday night and will last through the week. Thankfully, we will be cooler than we have been, with highs remaining in the 80's. I'll keep this short today, the wife and I are getting over the "rona" so we're taking it easy and resting. You see …

Good morning! Well, some of you got rain yesterday, and some of you didn't. I did but it wasn't much, so maybe today I'll get lucky. I need one good gully washer and I'll be happy. Today is not the last day for rain, as it will continue on through next week, but we will have some relief from the heat starting sometime on Sunday, and Monday looks to be the coolest day out of the next 7-10 days. As our high pressure slips west, the clockwise rotation around the high means the steering currents above us will now be coming more from the north to northwest, and there will be numerous impulses traveling through that flow across our area. Instead of the stagnant bowl …

Good morning! I hate to sound like a broken record, but here we are. No real changes for today, tomorrow and maybe Saturday as we're stuck in the same basic pattern that we've had for the last 7-10 days. More heat and more rain are in the offing for today, and the coverage may be a little greater than yesterday, so hopefully more folks get in on the rainfall action. I know the TV stations plaster the "Slight Risk" (Level 2 they call it) all over the screens, but the chance for severe weather is not that great today. The greatest and really the only threat besides lightning that we'll see will be from high winds that the more severe storms can create. We'l…

Good morning! Don't you just feel warm and cozy in this heat? 🙂 No? Me neither. I do not like 90 degree days, and I do not like the heat index in the 100 degree range, but it's not like I have a lot of say in the matter. So the forecast is for a lot of heat and a chance for some severe thunderstorms for today and tomorrow. We are under a strong ridge across the southeast, and ridges generally suppress the formation of thunderstorms. But with all of the low level moisture that's in place, some portions of north Georgia may still see some strong to severe thunderstorms. Those storms will most likely be confined to the northeast section of the state today, but spr…

Good morning! We had a great day at the pool yesterday and today may be very similar. Nothing is really going to change for the immediate future, so expect the same weather. So are you expecting rain today or are you saying you won't get any? It's all a crapshoot, so we'll just have to roll with it. I'll keep this short today and maybe tomorrow as well, as you already know the drill, there is nothing new that I can bring to the table this morning. I grabbed this radar image from yesterday afternoon, and in the picture I took of the storms (below the radar image), you can see three rainshafts that are dumping rain from those thunderstorms. That's me in th…

Good morning! Still not a lot to talk about so this will be short. Atlanta and the northern suburbs had a ton of rain last night and I know that messed up some fireworks displays. We watched a lot from our deck as we had a rain free night here in Big Canoe. The only change in the short term will be our rising temperatures. They won't become too excessive because of the clouds and moisture, but that moisture will also contribute to a rising heat index as we go through the week. Think thick soup. It is beginning to look like we might get a reprieve from the moisture beginning this weekend, but it will be dependent on a cold front making its way into Georgia, and …

Good morning! The July 4th weekend has arrived and I know everyone is anxious to get outside to have a little fun. I will go ahead and offer some pre-apologies in case the rain makes an appearance at your gathering, because I don't want it to rain on anyone's party. 😉 For the last several days it seems as though we have had 3-4 hours during the middle of the day when the clouds start burning off and the rain hasn't formed yet, so you may be able to take advantage of that gap and take that ride on the boat or go to the pool. Yes, I'm trying to look on the bright side of things because there aren't too many "bright" parts to the upcoming days. My best advice, if …

Good morning! The weather here may seem more Florida like than the north Georgia mountains, especially with all the rain that's around. And even though we've seen a decent amount or rain scattered around north Georgia, many people still haven't seen any. Hit or miss showers make it difficult to make outdoor plans, and that difficulty is going to continue for the next 7-10 days, as our pattern shows no signs of budging. I know people have many questions about the July 4 weekend weather forecast. First and foremost, we are in a classic summer weather pattern for the entire country and included in this type of pattern are the daily showers and thunderstorms. One…

Good morning! I've done pretty well for rain over the last two days. I had 0.72" for the 24 hour period ending at 6:45 AM yesterday, and in the early morning hours today we had a really nice downpour, but it didn't last long and only dropped 0.12" of rain. We are going to remain in a relatively cool and wet pattern for the next 7-10 days. The other option is 90's and baking sun, so I'll take the cooler and wetter solution. As if we have a choice. 🙂 The tropics are beginning to wake up as we see more and more waves come off the African coast, and it won't be much longer before we start to see a few tropical systems form. AL94 has now become PTC Two and it wi…

Good morning! We had some showers and thunderstorms across north Georgia last night that brought some much needed rain to to those that saw some. Today will be more of the same, except we should see a little greater coverage. The morning radar shows some ongoing showers and thunderstorms, and those will continue through the day and the early evening hours before diminishing after sunset. It now looks like the main system in the Atlantic will remain to the south, but we now have another system close on its heels. 94L will stay south as high pressure to the north blocks any northward turn. The tr…

Good morning! A very pleasant day is in store for today, and it should turn out much like yesterday. We'll have some clouds around and that will help to keep our temperatures in the comfortable range for today. We may have some rain late this evening as a cold front pushes into the state, but that shouldn't mess with any of your daytime plans. The next 7 days will bring highs in the low to mid 80's with a chance for rain each afternoon and evening. This is what I call "normal" summer weather. 🙂 We're watching two systems in the tropics at the moment, and I have details about both below. The GFS is showing a small tropical storm/hurricane impacting Florida a…

Good morning! Well... I told you yesterday that we were done with records for a while, but I wasn't thinking about rain. There were some light scattered showers across north Georgia this morning, but those have vanished now that the sun is up. There are a few light scattered showers lingering in the northeast mountains, but those will be disappearing soon. For the next 7 days you can expect highs around 80-85 degrees, lows around 65 degrees, and a 50-50 chance of rain each day. Simple summertime weather. We're not going to be as hot as we were, but it will still remain on the warm side for the next 5-7 days. Still …

Good morning! The oppressive heat is finally over. We had more records set yesterday but that should be the last day for setting records for a while. Beginning today the chance for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms returns, and that is going to continue for at least the next 7 days. The ridge that has been bringing the excessive heat to Georgia has shifted west and flattened out and is taking the heat with it. This morning we have an easterly flow off of the Atlantic, and that's bringing some clouds and moisture across our area, and when we combine that moisture with a little heating of the day we can expect to see some afternoon and evening shower…

Good morning! Ok, it's hot, I don't think anyone disagrees with that assessment. 🙂 Athens and Atlanta tied the records yesterday, and Macon set a new record. I grabbed a snapshot of my temperatures from this morning at 6:09 AM, and the high temperature for the day at that point was 82º at 2:21 AM. That's pretty warm for 2 AM! Last night was also the warmest night of the month with an average temp between 6 PM and 6 AM of 83.2º. m. The heat hangs on for a day or two, but there is some relief on the way. Rainfall will be meager through Friday, but the chances increase as time goes on. This is the …

Good morning! Now that summer has started, what else is there to look forward to? 🙂 More hot and sunny conditions? Check. No rain? Check. No tropical systems? Check. I mean what more could you possibly want? 😛 High pressure remains in charge for now, but it will slowly start to retrograde west and allow more moisture to move back over the area. Today is going to be the hottest day of the week with numerous high temp records in jeopardy. Thursday will be almost as hot as today, but the trend is for some cooler temperatures pushing into Georgia as the week goes on. Rainfall will remain non-existent over th…

Good morning! This is obviously a very late post, but you knew what the weather was going be like anyway. 🙂 Summer started at 5:15 AM this morning, although if you look at what our temperatures have been lately you'd probably say that summer started weeks ago. Today is actually shorter than yesterday by less than 1 second, so pretty soon it will be Winter. LOL The sun is still rising at a direction of 61º, and it will stay there until July 7th with it starts it's decline. There is nothing new to report today. Just the same heat and the same sun. We're going to be dry as well, so no real relief from any rain until we get toward the end of the week, and ev…

Good morning! Tomorrow is the start of summer! The June solstice (summer solstice) in Big Canoe is at 5:13 am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. In terms of daylight, this day is 4 hours, 37 minutes longer than the December solstice. In most locations north of the equator, the longest day of the year is around and for Big Canoe the day will be 14:27:45 long on Tuesday, which is less than 1 second difference than today. After tomorrow the days begin to get shorter. Repeat with me... "hot and dry". No real relief in sight for the next 4-5 days. I thought we might have a chance to cool down this upcoming weekend, but that is still in question. It's still very cool and da…

Good morning! Running a little late this morning. We're preparing to have guests this weekend and we're cleaning up and getting things ready. It's an old college friend of mine that I've only seen once since college, so it's going to be a treat! More of the same for today, you may see rain, you may not.We are still in a "Slight Risk (2/5) area for severe weather today, and there is a MCS moving southeast into Kentucky right now and that may impact our weather later this evening, but as you've seen the past few days, it's no guarantee. The weekend should be very nice with cooler temps and much lower dew points. Don't get use to it because the heat is coming …

Good morning! Cooler and drier ait is filtering into the state this morning, and it really feels great outside. The rain is over and won't return until the end of next week, so get ready for a hot and dry stretch of weather. Unless something decides to pop up in the tropics, there won't be a lot to talk about, so expect some very short posts next week. Today and Sunday are going to be beautiful days with low humidities, and most of north Georgia should have highs in the 80's today and tomorrow. The 90's return with a vengeance beginning Monday and run through the end of the week, and there won't be any cooling showers to bring us any relief from the heat. As th…

Good morning! Well, some people had some large thunderstorms that created some damage, but not here. We had a shower around midnight but it didn't last long and it didn't drop a lot of rain. Although the chances for rain are less, we should pretty much see more of the same today, and the area is under another Heat Advisory. If you are lucky enough to get some rain, good for you, because with the really hot conditions coming up next week we're going to need it. The heat returns on Monday and we will be baking again as we go through the work week, but not before we cool down and dry out a little on Saturday and Sunday. While the high temperatures will be slightly …

Good morning! Glad to see that some of you had rain yesterday, the storm that was heading for Big Canoe faded rapidly, hopped over the mountain, and reformed. Of course... 🙂 We are going to have another very good chance for rain today and we'll also see our highest temperatures of the week, and that heat plays a big part in how strong the storms get. You would never know it be looking outside right now, but we are in a highly unstable atmosphere with high CAPE and lapse rate values. What that means is that there won't be anything to hold back the storms today, and some of the storms may become severe, with the greatest threat coming from hail and water loaded …

Good morning! No changes for today as a very strong area of high pressure dominates the central part of the country, and that high isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The models show the high hanging around for the next 10 days, so get use to the heat. This is what I always fear about summer, getting trapped under a strong area of high pressure and ending up with never ending relentless heat. There is a bit of a feedback going on when these sit for a while, as they tend to reinforce themselves over time, and it often takes a tropical system to dislodge the high and change the pattern. The day is starting out hot across the central part of the US and southe…

Good morning! Today is the start of our heatwave, so keep the cold drinks and fans handy. The heat index will approach 100 degrees across north Georgia today, and it only gets worse as the week progresses. The only saving grace will be if you are lucky enough to get an afternoon and evening shower and thunderstorm over your house, otherwise, expect to experience brutally hot conditions through Friday. We will see some changes for the weekend as a cold front makes its way south and pushes the moisture away. That will help to remove the soupy feel to the air and bring some relief in terms of temperatures. I think today is a pool day... 🙂 …

Good morning! If you liked yesterday, you're going to like today! Just know that it is going to continue to get hotter, so your opinion might change as the week progresses. 🙂 We have some high clouds to start off the day, and those are associated with a wave of moisture to our west. There is no rain falling, so that won't be a concern, and the clouds will start to thin and clear out later this morning. After today most of Georgia heads to the 90's and possibly triple digits over the southeastern part of the state. To make matters worse, we will have low level moisture being pumped in from the Gulf which will take the heat index to the triple digits as well…
