Good morning! I figured it was time to make a weather post, and not because there is something lurking on the horizon. I find it more and more difficult to talk about "normal" weather, and we've had a lot of that lately, but the next several weeks may bring a little more variety to our weather. The models are showing above normal temperatures for the next 10 days, but that doesn't mean we won't have below normal periods within that time frame. It also looks like we'll see below normal precipitation for the next several weeks as well, so for those of you that are tired of the rain, I should be hearing some joyful praise. 🙂 Today will have high clouds hangi…

Good morning! Rain and more rain, nothing too interesting to talk about for the near future. After the rain ends this morning, we'll only see light rainfall totals through Wednesday, but heavier rain returns for Thursday and Friday that will bring our 5 day totals to 1.5-2.5". Our temperatures will remain fairly mild through the end of the day on Friday, but a cold front pushes through during the afternoon hours dropping our temperatures to 8-10 degrees below normal, just in time for the weekend. Other than a few breaks in the clouds on Tuesday, we can expect to have about 80-90% cloud cover through Friday, so don't expect to see a lot of sun this week. The morn…

Good morning! We have a system coming in tomorrow that may cause a few issues for some folks, so let's take a look at the setup. There is a area of low pressure developing over Texas this morning, and that low will strengthen as it starts to race off to the northeast. A cold front will trail from the low and cross the state with winds that will reach advisory levels and potentially higher. I could see the need for a High Wind Warning across some of the higher elevations of the mountains, but as it currently stands, a Wind Advisory has been issued that covers just about the entire state starting at midnight tonight through midnight tomorrow night. Looking at the …

Good morning! I know we've had a stretch of gloomy weather that I know everyone just loves, but it looks like we may have something on the horizon that may be of interest to many of you. There is a line of showers that is making its way into the state this morning, but it will be moving quickly across the area and bringing an end to the rain sometime around the noon hour. Friday and most of Saturday look to be pretty nice but the rain starts to creep back in late in the evening on Saturday. The heavier rain should remain to our south but we could still see close to an inch or so across North Georgia by Tuesday. All in all, the next 7 days will bring about 1.0"…

I won't make a regular post today since there really isn't anything goin on right now. But here's a little bit from Larry Cosgrove with his thoughts on the upcoming period.

Good morning! The severe situation has become more concerning this morning, as north Georgia is now in an "Enhanced Risk" area (3/5) for severe weather today. Some of the severe weather parameters are becoming concerning, and everything is coming into place for a severe weather event across north and central Georgia. The Significant Tornado values are now in the 3-5 range (out of 10) for most of north Georgia, but the greater threat comes in the form of damaging winds. There will be a very stout 50-60 mph low level jet right off the surface and the thunderstorms can and will tap into that wind and send that to the surface, and a dry layer in the mid levels will …

Good Wednesday morning! A very mild day is in store for today as we transition from a dry to moist environment. We are now starting to get a strong flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and as the day progresses, our dewpoints will rise from the 30's and 40's to the 50's and 60's. The temperatures will accompany the rise in dewpoints, and even though we'll have cloud cover all day, it will end up being a fairly comfortable for the middle of January. Tomorrow is when the real action begins. Right now it looks like the severe weather will hold off until the late afternoon hours, but there could be isolated showers and thunderstorms out ahead of the main …

Good morning! I figure I needed to make a post about the upcoming period, even though I'm not sure about the impacts here just yet. As you might have seen or heard, there is a system that will be swinging through the area next Friday/Saturday, and there is the potential for some wrap around moisture on the backside of the system. All of the models are showing it, including the ensembles, but it's very weak and not something I'd like to hang my hat on at the moment. If anything falls, it would be very light at best and I think the temperatures are going to be a little too warm. A more likely possibility is the chance for severe weather on Thursday in advanc…

Good Friday morning! Today and most of tomorrow are looking to be nice and sunny with relatively mild temperatures. Saturday will start to see an increase in cloud cover and by Sunday the rain returns. This time it won't be as heavy as the last time, and I call it a nuisance rain with just a few tenths of an inch of rainfall. Next week brings another chance of precipitation in conjunction with what the NWS calls "an interesting feature". Interesting features in the heart of winter always gets your attention, and this is no different. 🙂 The models are showing a cut off upper level low that swings over the southeast bringing a broad shield of precipitation …

Good morning! We're finally back from our trip, we got in late last night around 10:30 PM after the drive from hell. There was a one hour delay on the Florida Turnpike, and about 80 miles on I-75 was stop and go. Then we come back to this crappy weather that you've had to put up with for the last 5 days and it makes you want to go back on vacation. 🙂 There is going to be a chance for some severe weather later today and tomorrow, but today we are in a SPC Slight Risk (2/5) area for severe. While we have a pretty decent chance for severe weather across north Georgia, west central Georgia is in the area for the best chance. The severe parameters are at the le…

Good morning! Our well advertised cold period begins today. Based on how cold it was yesterday, I guess you could say it started then. I had a high of 42 and a low of 38 yesterday, but I spent the vast majority of the day in the 30's with a cold rain, all 2.08" of it. The rain is over and much drier air is ushing into the state. Dewpoints are already dropping into the low 40's. There will be another surge of colder air during the day tomorrow, and by Sunday morning well be solidly below freezing across north Georgia. We stay below normal until the big arctic blast comes late Thursday of next week. This will be one of, if not the coldest Christmas across G…

Good morning! Our first shot of cold air is inching our way this morning, as a large and deep upper level low goes negative tilt over the plains, triggering showers, thunderstorms, and tornadoes across the deep south. The wedge will strengthen today as warm moist air overrides the shallow cooler air. As rain falls into the wedge, it cools the air even further, and that causes the wedge to strengthen. Expect lows clouds (down to 1000 feet) and stratiform rain as the day progresses, and during the overnight hours that rain could become pretty heavy. We are under a Weather Prediction Center "Slight" Risk for excessive rainfall today and a Flood Watch has been issu…

Good morning! The wedge is now in place and will strengthen throughout the day, so that means cloudy and dreary conditions, along with a little fog to start the morning. Today and tomorrow will be pretty much the same, with the wedge holding strong. Many areas will struggle to get out of the 40's today, and we may be slightly warmer tomorrow but not by much. We shouldn't see any rain today, but some drizzle and mist will be possible in the area of the wedge. The heavy rain begins during the morning hours on Wednesday and will continue through late Thursday and we can expect to see another 2-3" of rain before it ends. Our first wave of cold starts Friday, …

Good morning! We're starting off not quite as cold and not as cloudy/foggy this morning compared to the last several morning's. For the most part we'll stay partly cloudy today, but we should see a big few breaks that will allow a little sunshine to pop through as drier air moves in for the day. The wedge that has been bringing the colder air and clouds/fog/drizzle/yuk to the area is a little weaker today, as the high pressure that was providing the push of colder air moves off to the east. But wait! There is another high waiting in the wings to replace it, and by tomorrow the wedge will return in force, causing daytime temperatures across north Georgia to strug…

Good morning! Another gloomy day is in store for us today and truthfully, for most of the work week. Sorry folks, it's the pattern that we're currently in. We have been under the influence of a wedge, and that almost always means cooler temperatures with low clouds and fog. The wedge is not going anywhere through Thursday, but it does ebb and flow a little bit. On Monday it should be a little weaker, but will strengthen again on Tuesday. We can expect some fairly substantial rain on Wednesday and Thursday as a cold front makes its way toward Georgia. During that round of precipitation we can expect to see another 1-2" of rainfall. If you like winter weathe…

Good morning! If you are looking out the window It kinda looks like yesterday morning, and if I didn't know where I lived, I might think I was up in the Pacific Northwest. We will remain in the clouds and fog again today, so don't expect any improvement as the CAD airmass gets reinforced. Later this evening we will have some showers moving back over the area, and those showers will hang around through the day on Sunday. Simply put, it's more of the same weather into the middle of next week before the new pattern starts to take hold on Friday. The WPC rainfall forecast brings another 2-3" of rain across north Georgia before the cold weather moves in. I…

Good morning! I've been off a few days because we took a trip to go see the Biltmore and had a great time. Dreary is the weather word for the foreseeable future. Off and on rain and clouds will hang around the area through the middle of next week, so we might as well settle in and make the best of it. We can expect to another 3-4" of rain through next Friday but we still need the rain so we shouldn't complain. Our temperatures will remain well above normal, but at least it won't be cold rain like we often get during the winter months. The middle of next week will bring a dramatic change to our weather, and that change brings the cold in several step…

Good morning! We're starting off relatively mild this morning, with high clouds and some low level fog to greet the day. Today will be the nicest day out of the next 6 days, so I hope you can get out and enjoy it. Rain returns on Monday and the work week will generally be a dreary one. Heavy rain is expected on Monday and Tuesday, and the Weather Prediction Center has most of north Georgia covered in a "Slight Risk" (2 out of 4) for excessive rainfall and flash flooding. We can expect to receive another 2-3" of rainfall between now and the end of the week, so it looks like most outdoor plans may be in jeopardy. Our temperatures will remain very mild and a…

Good morning! A fairly wet day is in store for today as as cold front approaches the north Georgia area. We are waking up to showers, and this is the first of what looks like three waves of rain today. The front is losing its punch as it moves closer to Georgia and it won't push very far south of Atlanta before it stalls. That will leave us with a mostly dry day on Sunday, but that front will lift back to the north and by Monday the rain will return, and this time it will be a little heavier. Rainy conditions will last most of the work week as a boundary becomes stationary across north Georgia, and there will be periods of heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday. How …

Good morning! It's only appropriate that we start off winter with some cold air and winds as "Old Man Winter" makes his presence known. The cold we're seeing now won't last, and by Saturday we'll return to above normal temperatures and rain back in the forecast. The mild temperatures and rain will stick around through next Wednesday or so before getting pushed out by our first winter blast of cold air. Between Saturday to Wednesday, we are expecting another 3-4" of rain. A major pattern change is looming on the horizon, so get ready for weather that is much colder than what we've been experiencing, and perhaps a little whiter. Beginning sometime around the…

Good morning! The morning is starting off with clear skies and mild temperatures for this time of the year, but all of that will be changing later today as a cold front advances toward Georgia bringing showers and thunderstorms to the area, and some of those storms may become severe during the overnight hours and into Wednesday morning. Folks to our west have a lot to be concerned about later today and this evening. The SPC has issued a Moderate (4 out of 5) for all of central Mississippi, and in that area there is a 10% chance for EF-2 to EF-5 tornadoes, some of which may be long track. During the overnight hours, that weather will be making its way towar…

Good morning! First of all, and just to be clear, we are not expecting a tornado outbreak on Tuesday here in Georgia, this outbreak is going to occur over Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and west Tennessee. Conditions will be conducive for a region tornado outbreak on Tuesday due to substantial moisture advection combined with high levels of shear and helicity. Long track tornadoes will be possible. For us, the severe weather parameters just don't line up like the Tuesday outbreak. While we may see a few strong thunderstorms during the overnight hours and into Wednesday morning, I don't believe we'll have any major threats for severe weather as the main …
