Time to start looking ahead at the tropical season, and what it may bring this year. We've been very lucky the last few years, but that may not be the case for this season. This is the Colorado State hurricane forecast. EXTENDED RANGE FORECAST OF ATLANTIC SEASONAL HURRICANE ACTIVITY AND LANDFALL STRIKE PROBABILITY FOR 2024 We anticipate that the 2024 Atlantic basin hurricane season will be extremely active. Current El Niño conditions are likely to transition to La Niña conditions this summer/fall, leading to hurricane-favorable wind shear conditions. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic are currently at record warm levels and are anticip…

Larry Cosgrove "Forecasting winter to spring transitions is hard enough. But when you add a fairly steep change from an El Nino to a La Nina, things can get really difficult. Note that the sea surface temperature anomalies in ENSO 1.2 and 3 are already rapidly dropping, which tells us that we should be in a negative neutral anomaly further west in the Pacific Basin by August 1. Since hydrothermal patterns are forecast to concurrently warm greatly in the Atlantic Basin, the incentive for heat ridge formation will soon be evident. The southern branch jet stream will then have to gain in latitude (see the AMJ 2m Temperature Anomaly from ECMWF), taking communities in…

Good morning! Jut a few words from the WPC on the weekend rainfall potential. While these kinds of events aren't all that uncommon, unfortunately the mesoscale nature of the boundary makes it notoriously difficult for the guidance to resolve. There's very good agreement that given this Day 3 forecast that there will be an area of very heavy rainfall that persists for an extended period of time, there is enough uncertainty as to whether the heaviest and most persistent rains impact an urban area, which would greatly enhance the flash flooding risk and resultant impacts. While even rural areas would be greatly impacted by as …

Good Monday afternoon! There is a lot of weather to talk about, but very simply put, it's going to be wet. Today won't be a bad day. We still have some mid-level clouds around, which is suppressing our temperatures at the moment, but those areas that are getting some sunshine are rocketing up to the 70's. I'm not sure we'll get that high today because I believe that the clouds won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Tomorrow starts another rainy period, as a trough lifts out of the Gulf and increases the moisture levels to saturation, but the bulk of the rain should hold off until later in the day. We may hear some thunder tomorrow, but severe weather is not …

Good morning! Our fair weather will be coming to an end, as an upper level low starts to impact our area beginning tomorrow. The chances for heavy rain have seemed to have stabilized, and now show the greatest chances long the coast and over southeast Georgia. North Georgia can still expect to see a decent amount of rain, with the heaviest totals across the eastern side of the state. This is the WPC rainfall forecast. Zoomed in view for Georgia. Winds will be the biggest impact, and the majority of those winds will happen as the low passes to our east. Gust in the 40 mph range can be expected due to the pressure gradie…

Good morning! We are going to have a fairly dynamic system come through this weekend, and even though we'll be warm enough for rain, we'll pretend like it's a practice run for this winter when it's colder. 🙂 An upper level trough will be advancing our direction over the next day or so, and that will be our next weather maker. A few days ago the system looked worse than it is going to be, but thankfully the bulk of the severe weather will be confined to our west. This is the Day 3 Convective Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center. The severe weather will be concentrated over Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi on Saturday, so…

Good morning! It's COLD this morning! The cold air has settled in the low lying areas this morning, so some of you are colder than the higher elevations this morning. My temperature anomaly for the month so far, today will show up tomorrow. We will have another shot of cold air arriving toward the middle of next week, and that should be a pretty decent blast of cold weather. The ensembles are shown first. These are all December 7th. The deterministic models are tracking the same as the ensembles. The models are still struggling with the timing, strength and location of the…

Good morning! We'll have one nice day of weather before a wedge moves in on Saturday, bringing clouds and cooler weather for all of north Georgia. Saturday will be a mixed day across northern part of the state. Those folks in the wedge might only see highs in the upper 40's to low 50's, while those outside of the wedge, including those in the western and northwestern part of north Georgia, may see highs in the upper 50's to low 60's. There is a caveat to the forecast for next week. The ensembles are not in really good agreement with the actual forecast from the National Weather Service, nor are they in good agreement with themselves. The daily high/low im…

Good morning! I hope everyone has been enjoying the nice fall weather that we've had in place for a week or two, as that will be coming to an end on Tuesday. First, we will be under a Wind Advisory beginning at 7 pm this evening. Our chances for severe weather have increased, although it's still not going to be a major threat. Here's the thoughts from the Storm Prediction Center. As you can see, most of north Georgia lies outside of the areas with the greatest chance for severe weather, but that doesn't rule out severe for the northwest corner. Here are the thoughts from the Atlanta NWS office. …

Good evening! We are going to see some changes in the weather starting tomorrow, but bigger changes come next week. We are probably not going to see much if any rain across north Georgia with this first system, as the surface low tracks too far south. This weekend should be fairly mild and dry, but shortly after the start of next week, we may possibly be looking at a chance for some severe weather. A deep trough is going to be swinging across the southeast, and that trough will be pulling in cold air behind it. This will be a fairly strong system, and with it comes a chance for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms. Keep in mind, we are currently in the 2n…

I ended up with about 0.30" of rain so far, and the light rain and drizzle will continue through the late afternoon. It's going to remain cold with our highs running about 10 degrees below normal. We will slowly trend warmer as the week progresses, and we're starting to see some healthy signs of additional rainfall during the week. The trough that is currently situated over the western US, will slowly deepen and advance east, while at the same time a cut off surface low starts to develop over the western Gulf. That low will start to pump moisture into Georgia starting late Monday, and by Tuesday rain will start to break out over the southeast. We will rem…

Good afternoon! Well, that quick shot of cold air has been great, but the cold will start to fade as the trough pulls northeast and out to sea. In its place, a quasi-zonal flow sets up with a fairly progressive pattern, and that will bring some milder temperatures to our area for a little while. My first freeze dates keep getting earlier and earlier. We actually stay below normal through Sunday, and then we see a return of some above normal temperatures through most of next week, before a weak cold front passes through, dropping the temperatures back below normal. It appears that we'll stay fairly mild through the middle of the month, b…

Good morning! We are quickly approaching the end of the month, we will be warming up for the next 5-7 days or so, before our temperatures take a tumble. Here's the morning map, showing 500 mb isobars and wind, as well as temperatures. There are several features to note. Starting from the top left, there is a very deep upper level low crashing the coast of Washington, and that low will pinwheel across the upper US, drawing in colder air behind it. Notice the temperatures just across the border in Canada, and also across Montana. Notice the 11 degree temperature in Cut Bank. Winter has begun up north, ands it won't be long before we start to feel some of that col…

Good morning! We're headed toward the end of the month, with another 5-6 days of relatively cool temperatures in store for our area before we warm up slightly. Clouds and moisture will be on the increase today, as another trough and an area of low pressure heads our direction. By this afternoon, we should be mostly cloudy, and during the day tomorrow we may see a few showers and thunderstorms. We're not going to see much rain out of this system, so don't expect help in relieving the dry conditions that are in place across the state. The new drought maps will be out this morning, so we'll see how much worse things have gotten over the last week. Once the fr…

Good morning! Enjoying this fall weather? It's a little cold this morning across north Georgia, where we've seen lows in the upper 30's and low 40's across the area. My low today was 43 degrees, and that is my coldest low temperature since May 1, when I hit 42.8º. Yesterday was my coolest high temperature (59.2º) since April 27 when I reached 55.4º. Today should be colder, so we'll see how that goes. The same years keep showing up in all the discussions about the upcoming winter, and based on other data and information that is available, it appears to me that we are going to have a cold and stormy winter. We'll have plenty of cold air and a very active southern …

Good morning! Has everyone enjoyed the rain? 🙂 I ended up with 0.64" of rain here at the house, so I did a little better than expected. these are very early precipitation reports, but it appears the NW corner of the state was on the sort end of the stick, but as you go further south and east, the totals increase. I've see a lot of 4"+ measurements over northern Florida, along with reports of tornadoes. We'll have one more shot of rain tomorrow morning, as moisture surges back into the area in advance of a cold front, and the front will kick off a few showers and thunderstorms out ahead. Once the front clears, we'll see those below normal temperatu…

Good morning! I've been doing a little fixing up of the website here, and I've have a lot more to go. I'll be adding some new features, fixing some things that are a little wonky, and doing some general maintenance. I've also added some new Twitter feeds, since I lost all of the list I had when Twitter suspended my account. I'm trying to go back and remember all the accounts I followed and at least get some of them back. If you were hoping for a good dousing of rain, you'll have to keep hoping. The rain shield continues to shift to the south, and we are starting to look at meager amounts across north Georgia. The NWS Weather Prediction Center and NWS Atlanta a…

Good morning! I hope everyone has been enjoying the awesome fall weather that we've been experiencing, we'll have a few more days of it, in a slightly modified form, before we get a brief but hopefully productive day or two of rain, before clearing once again. We do need the rain, and the drought continues to creep into the state. This is the latest drought map, and you can see that both the northwest and southwest corner of the state are getting pretty dry. Help is on the way though, especially for the southwest corner. These are rainfall totals through next Monday, but all the rain ends by early morning on Saturday. This is the official forec…

Good evening! Another beautiful day today, and we'll have two more nice days before some clouds roll in, the winds shift to the NW and become gusty, and much drier and colder air rushes into the state, bringing our first REAL taste of fall with it. The Euro brings the leading edge of the cold front into the state around 2 PM Saturday morning, and by 8 AM (these images), the front will be well to our south. However, the GFS is running a little quicker and it brings the front through late Friday night. 8 AM Precipitable Water values from the Euro and GFS deterministic models The higher winds start to move in during the early morning hours…

Good morning! I hope everyone is enjoying this nice stretch of weather that we're having! When I started this post this morning about 9 am, I grabbed the next two images that show the temperatures and temperature anomalies at 8:30 AM across the lower 48 states. The top right of the image gives a nice summary, and the below the image, the temperatures are further broken out into other categories. Those temperatures equate to these anomalies. We were running about 4.4º above normal. Here we go with a new month, so let's see how September turned out. Here at the house, September ended up pretty much like June as far as my…

I found out this morning that meteorologist Chris Robbins passed away on August 30. I didn't know Chris well, but knew him well enough to ask him to help out here, especially during the winter months, and he agreed. We had initially talked a lot on Facebook, but we had a little issue one day and I decided to not go that route with him. Chris had had some ups and downs for the last 4-5 years, and I hope those issues weren't the cause of his death, but I fear it was. Chris was a very smart guy that had worked for the National Hurricane Center, NWS Atlanta, NWS Dallas/Ft Worth, and more, and he had more than 120,000 followers on Facebook. He helped author multipl…

Here's a piece from Joe D'Aleo with WeatherBELL about the potential for the upcoming winter. 🙂 🍺❄️ ---------------------------------------------- The strength of the El Nino in the Pacific runs counter to the MEI/PDO. The east Pacific turned colder in 1998 following a super El Nino. The PDO has been mostly negative with La Nina's dominating (except 2015/16). When El Nino's try to happen they tend to develop or evolve into what is called a Modoki with the warm water more moderate and biased to the central tropical Pacific. They result as JB and I and others have noted is a very different winter for the US. The…

Good morning! Man... this month has flown by! It's hard to believe that we're getting ready to start October! The nice weather we've been experiencing is going away for 3 days or so, but it will return beginning Friday. In the meantime, we'll have slight chances for showers along with mostly cloudy skies. We weak wedge forms on Wednesday, and that hangs around for a couple of days. Our temperatures will run slightly above normal today, below normal on Wednesday, and normal on Friday. There is still no major weather to talk about, as high pressure is going to take charge again once we get past Thursday. This is a very typical fall weather pattern for us, wi…

Good morning! No weather to talk about for us at the moment, but we do have what will be Ophelia off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina, and that will be bringing some heavy rains to the east coast, but nothing for us here in Georgia except clear skies and light winds. Once Ophelia gets over land, the models start to become a little confused. "Which way will she go". She will most likely curve our to sea but she may stall for a short time, dumping heavy rains to the coastal Carolina's and the Mid-Atlantic states. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, we will stay dry until Tuesday, but from that point…
